Sure. But, and here's a Spicy Opinion for the spicy opinions thread: **** gnomes.
Nearly every gnome is nothing but "LAAWWWL I'm just so random and capricious! Look at these high-LAY-rious antics! Ooops I blew up another laboratory, tee hee hee! Look, I invented magic hair dye that also works on your toenails!", and basically every other shitty terrible Mad Scientist meme that makes me want to projectile vomit from the nipples. They're the modern-day kender and I hate their default lore. I've always treated gnomes as being to halflings what elves are to humans - fey creatures, secretive and cautious, prone to wonder and curiosity but not to the degree of being complete idiots, or to the degree of exploding every building they're in for longer than three minutes. Almost more refugees and/or explorers from a realm a little beyond what most people live in.
I've always played Gnomes similar to Brownies, Hobs and Santa's Elves. They're curious tinkerers that love helping people because that brings them joy. I've never seen them played "lol, so random" before, especially not to the extent of the Kender or Kobolds. They're like a mix of Elves/Fey and Dwarves. They have the inventiveness of Dwarves with the appreciation of the world that Elves have. I personally think, if played correctly, they can be great in most campaigns. Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes has some pretty good lore for them.
The "they only create items that explode in their face" is from Dragonlance. And Dragonlance's Small Races (Tinker Gnomes, Gully Dwarves, Kender) are all terrible. Eberron and Lantan Gnomes are way better than Dragonlance's.

Granted, I always figured Halflings are to Humans as Gnomes are to Elves, but I can't say I've played a Rock Gnome yet. Even my Artificer is a Forest Gnome. Their PHB lore/traits (Natural Illusionist, Speak with Small Beasts) interested me a lot more than the Rock Gnome traits, and I wanted the +1 DEX more than +1 CON as a Rogue (this was pre-Tasha's.)
In any case, I'm more or less playing myself as a gnome - intensely curious about everything, lover of small animals, prone to talk at length about subjects that interest me. Sorry if that's a problem.
Edit: Also, c'mon Yurei, I showed my anime creds about Gurren Lagann with that quip, ya gotta give me something nicer for that...
What amuses me is that I seem to have accidentally stumbled backwards into Yurei's Badass Halfling archetype with my Wild-Magic Sorcerer Lightfoot Halfling (speaking of LOL SO RANDOM ^^;; ). Especially the time she rolled the Reincarnate If You Die effect, felt invincible as a result, and stabbed a sleeping Hunter Shark right in the eye.
No problem at all. Heh, it's a Spicy Opinion thread and I had a spicy opinion. Most people around the board seem to love gnomes, and people bent the entire artificer class into an excuse for Mad Science tom****ery. It's a super popular trope and people love it, but I just cannot stand that shit. But much like how I dearly love my drow, I'm never gonna tell people off for loving their characters. I may detest the very idea of the lolrandom I'm-so-hilarious-hahaha Wild Chemistry bullshit 'Mad Science' types, but that doesn't apply to people not at my table, ne?
My opinion on goblinoids that’ll tick everyone off: they should be the “Bowser” or “King Dedede” type, the kinda-sorta enemy that isn’t bad enough to use lethal force against, that you invite to your races and parties after the latest brawl, and who you can team up with against the real bad guys.
(At least I think more settings should have someone playing this role.)

Personally, I like having goblins as low level challenges, and then they lead up to a bigger threat and generally boss.
I don't have them be like Bowser and just "SMASH" since they have an int of 10 (just like an average human). But I agree that, when used as monsters, they should be mostly working for stronger enemies. Those enemies could be anything from a bigger and smarter goblin or goblinoid, or anything like a massive, connniving blue dragon.

Bowser built a fleet of airships and have an neigh infinite supply of clockwork weapons. I don't think the idea is that he was supposed to be a big dumb lizard.

I actually blame Dragonlance for gnomes as well, that's the earliest I recall running into tinker gnomes.

BoringBard's long and tedious posts somehow manage to enrapture audiences. How? Because he used Charm Person, the #1 bard spell!
He/him pronouns. Call me Bard. PROUD NERD!
