So me and my friends are going to do a game and i am teaching one of our friends how to DM, we will have a party of 3 so yeah not a party of 5 like normal.
Best friend is playing a firbolg Tempest cleric His GF is playing a dark elf moon druid
We are starting at level 7, we also like to roleplay heavily while also having a good amount of combat in our games so a good mix.
Can i get some recommendations of what to play? I have some ideas but would like some other opinions for party balance! Btw we rarely ever multiclass unless it's for a 1-2 level dip sometimes 3 for gimmicks and mechanics.
It depends on how you do RP social interaction If it's just RP and rating how the player does, this may not be a good suggestion. If you do it like I do where the player RP's social interaction and, judging the arguments they make, the DM gives a roll (so if they're trying to be persuasive, it'll be persuasion, intimidating and they get intimidation, etc), then a good Face would be a help, so strong in Charisma. Since you have two full casters, I'd go for a Paladin. Useful to fill most roles, can lean into Face and great to have around in small parties.
If you're doing full RP, then you don't need Cha. Your party seems to lack Int instead, so I'd either go Wizard for control or Rogue Arcane Trickster to get the sneaky role. Alternatively, you could go Artificer, which might help.with skills, but I think would struggle in a small group - they're more for supplementing rather than being a major contributor to combat, so mine struggled doing Sunless Citadel.
Those would be my suggestions.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
We roll a lot for persuasion and rp success and failure so rolls are a big thing at our table we even rollplay nat 20/1 on attacks.
also we have a crit rule for players and monsters that when you crit damage is done as if all damage dice were rolled at max damage so a rapier 1d8 would be a 16 instead of rolling 2 1d8’s which we have done for years (ps monsters get to do the same which was only a massive issue once but makes death a looming threat from all no matter who is stronger)
also nat 1’s can cause creatures and players to friendly fire depending on positioning.
our moon druid will be a tanky front line often with out heavy armored sword and board tempest cleric.
thought i would add some information to this now that you brought up more info lol.
also the adventure us homebrewed and all i know is the dm accidentally said mimic knight with no context, i chose to ignore it though since our whole group including me hate meta gaming.
I agree with the idea of int based. Like a wizard or artificer. Artificer would have the bonus of thieves tool proficiency. And it could be a fun dynamic to be the tech guy roaming around with a couple nature-type hippies. If you do go wizard, consider something like the urchin background to get those thieves tools. Or summon creatures to send ahead and spring the traps for you, though that won’t help with locked doors.
i mean for locked doors you have enlarge/reduce and knock sooo works out while for traps you have lots of options as a wizard so maybe a wizard could be fun.
hmm chaisma face class or int based wizard… idk i mean my struggle is because they are both damage dealing tanky support healers with full spell casting which leaves me in a bit of confusion of what would vibe best.
I though about a vengeance paladin dipped in hexblade, a full warlock build, an eloquence bard, a zealot barbarian (two sources of resurrection), or an assassin rogue (i honestly don’t enjoy most rogue subclasses and assassin is bad but the only one that got my interest), or a wizard so far.
was going to do a twilight cleric because selune is one of my favs but the player i least expected to play a cleric wanted to play a tempest so yeah XD
I’d go for any class that isn’t focused on melee myself. Your two teammates are both great in melee, so something that will let you hit opponents at a distance would be very useful.

Summon an Earth Elemental, point at the door and say "be a lockpick." Or just cast Knock if you want to be boring.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Arcane trickster rogue with a half decent int and charisma. You get ranged combat, traps and locks, some arcane spells, and a wide selection of skills. Have your stats set to Dex then Int and Chr, followed by your choice. Ideally you would want a good Wis for seeing traps but hopefully your cleric will cover that part.
A rogue would be one of the obvious choices but if that's not your bag I have some other suggestions.
I'm thinking that the things you lack are charisma (for social interaction) and intelligence (for skills 'n' stuff). You already have two full casters so you don't *need*, say a wizard. A bard (any bard, really) is never wrong and gives you both the int-based skills and the charisma stuff. An Artificer Artillerist would also fit, that will allow you to support your party from a distance and you can do all the technical stuff on the side.
In general, if you do play a character that has both good charisma and intelligence, it could be fun to have wisdom for your dump stat. Basically play a social and edcuated character that are completely oblivious to the world around them. Works well for both an artificer and a bard.

I'm partial to Oath of the Ancients Paladins. I think it would mesh best with the abilities and theme.
