I'm working on building a city, and I want the theives and urchins to have a common slang that's easy for my PCs to pick up on and to understand. Any helpful hints or ideas?
If you are actually going to use it at the table, have them help you build a lexicon. Part of the fun of creation is participating in it. Also one of the chores of creation is finishing it. If they are adding to it and making it their own, it will get longer legs than if you build it for them and try to coerce them into using it.
If you just want it for occasional flavor... then I wouldn't worry about it... make up some nonsense sayings that the characters hear. If they roll well, give them some insight. If they don't... they think they learn something else. This would be a good place for a group roll... average their results and give them some good information and some bad information. If someone rolls a 20, you whisper in their ear.
