I am looking forward to the WotC team can launch a new official setting, although I have been told many times this is meaningless.
For me, new setting represent new story and new characters -- A new legend that can contact and contrast with the older generation. This means that the new setting requires more than rulebook, it needs supporting novels and even video games; I think WotC will not do this for a long time in the future.
It must be different, but in some parts it reminds you of old settings, just like Eberron. And this "different" new member and the settings you are familiar with(like FR and DL) exist in the same big picture, they have the opportunity to contact each other, the conflict between their values and worldview will develop great stories and adventures. I know that some worlds are not suitable to contact each other, like Birthright and Dark Sun; But they are different and coexist, I think this has the potential to develop stories.
I think that my self-made setting and the WotC launch setting are two different things, you can't stop walking because of "I have the ability to create my world" or "third-party settings", they are not the same thing. On the one hand, I want to see the creativity of WotC team; On the other hand, I think they have better resources to show it on multiple media, and I think they will not set crystal sphere for a third-party.
I don’t agree that “After launching Eberron, there is not much room for invention", there are many styles that they have not used, like putting D&D in a 1950s-style world, or the ancient Chinese/Japanese style plus dungeon punk. I don't think "This is not D&D", former creators have done more crazy things, they let the sci-fi starship crash into a fantasy world. And I think that putting a lot of elements from other set into FR, this is true strange.
I really enjoy reading the campaign setting, it can give me design inspiration, even if I don't actually use its elements in the game. The feeling of creating my world and reading existing settings is different, your setting is unknown to me, reading it itself is a kind of exploration, an adventure. And I need more of this adventure, I need a fresh adventure, and it is clearly related to other worlds that I remember.Or just need one new, I don't know. It may happen this year, or I'll never see it. :)
I see your point but don't think they'll do it. 5e (with the help of Critical Roll) has brought a LOT of new players to D&D and as someone who has really only played 5e, I want them to release some of the established worlds first! I think they'd have a bigger market selling some of the old campaign settings. BUT, you're right, old school players would probably lap up a new setting if done properly. (Maybe you're right, a new setting could attract new and old players).
Consider getting the Tal'Dorei campaign guide, set in the world of Exandria created by Matthew Mercer of Critical Role.
Or make a world of your own.

I'd like to see them develop a world based on Ancient Greek/Roman civilization or time era. They would still have perfect reasons for the classes, there would be plenty of gods to choose from, plenty of heroes and villains to call upon, awesome adventures, and you'd get to have all of those mythological creatures!

I saw Mike Mearls has give a promise (maybe?), all the old settings will come back at future. But I doubt that this scene can't be seen until 2050.
