Scatterbrained: Ugh. And a lot more and pained "Ugh!" I didn't even think of that. Now I really am hoping for 6e, literally to avoid that mess... and to complete my collection of 5e.
Chaosrex: Lol, nice XBOne-ing there... and really, half the time I'm defending their choices, like, "They have tons of data that we don't. This is happening too fast for the new CEO to just be saying, "Screw 25% of our profits! I want Ardlings!" Or to be a bit dated, "Screw the rules, I have money!" But the other half the time, I feel like I'm licking boots so hard that I'm about to cough one up.
I have seen lots of comments about the UA rules and mechanics but no one seems to have looked at the name given to the improved system.
I like it, it indicates Wizards are moving away from a versioning approach to more of a living system. Games Workshop did this a while back and it has vastly improved the system and allowed them to quickly move to change and improve issues with the rules that crop up creating a better balance. It also helps us all feel that all we own isn’t going to be thrown out and redone
I also like the idea that it binds all DnD together, every campaign going on, published, homebrew and everything else is all part of the same multiverse.
so yea just my thoughts (and no doubt another thing for some people to start complaining about lol)
except it will be a new system...just in the play test, they are doing away with races and subraces. looks to me like they are trying to get rid of halfling all together and it just be a small human. the sophistry and rhetoric sounds great but what its really going to be is a vastly different thing. they don't want to tell everyone that they are making a new system. then the books they have planned for the next two years will tank...why am I going to buy materials that are going to be obsolete in a couple of years?
When was the last 5e book that included subraces? Almost 3 years ago, I think? It's already happened in this edition. Besides, subraces are still there in elves and gnomes, just called "lineages." (Also, halfling is still right there with traits different than humans.)
So far we only have 1 document, but if this is "vastly different" from 5e, then you might want to go back and look at how 2e compares to 3e. Getting rid of THAC0, throwing out decades of saving throws being Rod/Staff/Wand, Paralyzation/Polymorph, etc. and building a completely new system, completely redoing skills, creating "feats" and "prestige classes" out of nowhere, entirely re-doing multiclassing, ditching "dual classing" and racial class level limits.
Then look at 3e to 4e with all classes having the same kinds of abilities (at-wills, per-encounters, and daily powers), 30 level progression, adding minions, completely re-doing multiclassing again, etc. Then 4e to 5e, etc.
Now those were all vastly different changes and creating a new system that made past books obsolete. This is nowhere remotely close to that level of change! When they start having 30th level spells again, or making saving throws based on school of magic rather than ability score or some such, skills being d% rather than d20 again, then it will start being comparable to actual full edition changes.
It's a weird name that I think people are missing the point of.
Here in the US we live in One Nation. That's the point of One D&D. It isn't the number so much as the ropes that bind the games together. It's not his D&D and her D&D, where they each play with their own homebrew rules. It's one D&D where most people will play RAW because they're expected to play on their phone and it's just easier for everyone to play One D&D.
Besides that, I'm actually laughing a bit. Wizards of the Coast just hates "sixth edition"s. In Magic: the Gathering it was called Classic. Here we are and we might not get a number again, even though ever since 7th edition, Classic has been called 6th edition, because jumping off the number train is dumb.
No, I get that "one D&D" resonance with "one nation" and the pretense of "indivisible". And it's still just that, a pretense, that "everyone" will be playing "one d&d", especially given these play test documents specifically say _some_ players may take character options from _other books_ (like MMM etc). I"m not a branding consultant, but I do argue with them on Zoom, so I feel qualified to say If you're already diluting you're "one" by expressly putting exceptions into your playtest out the gate, your indivisible conceit is already lost and should be abandoned.
You may be onto something about an aversion to the number 6, it's sometimes thought of as a bad or unlucky number, where 7 is associated with look and divinity. But again, I only argue with brand consultants.
Ahhh of course, can’t use the number 6 it over Satanises the product and opens the door to corruption :)

They have already said MMM and everything else are made to work, the 5E PHB races will work in the new system. It is backwards compatible.
It's a codename so I'm not overly bothered, but the elevator pitch of having no editions reeks of it being like video games' "live services" or "games-as-a-(dis)service." If they stopped wandering around in circles and called it Revised 5th, or 6th edition, I'd be at ease because then I've got some expectation that isn't oozing with cynicism. They can ditch the "World's Greatest Roleplaying" tagline while they're at it.
Zero is the most important number in D&D: Session Zero sets the boundaries and the tone; Rule Zero dictates the Dungeon Master (DM) is the final arbiter; and Zero D&D is better than Bad D&D.
"Let us speak plainly now, and in earnest, for words mean little without the weight of conviction."
I suppose it is intended to be unifying - One D&D to rule them all :-)
Kidding aside, I do believe that their intent is for unification, bringing the core of 5e over to a broader system that is less forgotten realms focussed (for better or for worse) - which no doubt people will bicker and argue about too :)
We've had the AD&D branch which people now just look at as another edition, although it too was a big change, which eventually got rolled back to just D&D.
So I'm actually not too fussed, history is littered with confusing editions, versions, re-brandings, successes and mistakes. I do believe it is still mainly a working title - but even if it ends up being One D&D, then let's just hope that it brings the best of 5e with it, and continues to enable lots and lots of people to make great stories, new content, and have fun!
Memes aside; I can't help but think there's a certain degree of hubris involved in the idea that one could create a "living rule system that shall last forever and there shall never come another edition of this game! It shall be teh perfect universal TTRPG system forever and all time!"... Because I've heard that song and dance before in this space.
Should be noted that One D&D is the playtest codename, just like how D&D fifth edition went by D&D Next
Yeah, I think most know that; but D&D Next was nevertheless a more honest descriptor than One, especially if you look at the infomercials dumped out on announcement day. Next implies simply the latest iteration or concordance of D&D,. The talk of "One" coming out of Crawford et al's mouths as they read (one guy you can actually see his pupils tracing the text) probably Todd's teleprompter makes it sound like this iteration is supposed to be some final D&D. Not "just D&D" as 5th edition tried, but that whatever they call One D&D will be the foundation for D&D from here on. It's an unnecessary pretense, and actually exacerbates and justifies the roasting the half-race rules, notably, are getting on social media.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
I honestly like OneD&D. It'll take some time to break the habit of typing "5e" at the end of all my google searches, but that's the nature of progress!
However, I do have a bit of a sadness chuckle every time I hear someone complain about "D&D One" Like, you know the order of words matters, right?? lol
Small thing, but I wish there was a Poll attached. I feel like most people both hope and believe that "One D&D" is a pure code name for this planet edition, until official re-titling into 6e BUT I'd kinda like to see the percentages. Just judging by comments and the number of isn't enough, as there are more people that seem to just read the thread and vote than actually comment.

Have been Calling D&DONE...
cause ONE D&D feels stupid and backwards...
And it being DONE, feels appropriate
"Normality is but an Illusion, Whats normal to the Spider, is only madness for the Fly"
Kain de Frostberg- Dark Knight - (Vengeance Pal3/ Hexblade 9), Port Mourn
Kain de Draakberg-Dark Knight lvl8-Avergreen(DitA)

The TTRPG is really good fun. Paranoia is another great older game to try (reminiscing now about the of roleplay systems).

I'm not a fan of the the name, but I realize that it's a codename.
They should name it D&D 10, so there will never be another edition ever, ...not even an 11th edition. ;>)

- The Assemblage of Houses, World of Warcraft
Replied to your blogpost disagree with most of your concerns there but I do understand where your coming from.
They can call it what they want, but the title sounds backwards. Dont put the subtitle or edition notifier after the main title, it's just awkward.
No one is ever going to call it "One D&D" when referring to it unless someone is confused. It'll be D&D 1, but not D&D 1e, heh.

I personally think that the 'one' symbolizes the idea that everyone will put their ideas into the one thing, as they said in the trailer.
