So what is the current state of things? I know a significant number of DM's and content creators are either trying to figure out how to migrate systems or have already. I know there are a number of OGL’s being built by other game publishers. Has there been any legal recourse that any one knows about? Is there any idea of wotc's next steps? Silence in the face of this scenario will just spiral further. They need to activly manage the crisis, hope that it will die down seems like a further misstep.
On another note I have noticed a large number of people who don’t see the OGL changes as relevant to them. I struggle to understand that point of view but accept that it is there. I would say listen to the YouTube (there are many out there now) that explain the damage to the ecosystem which ironically enough will damage wotc's core business revenue which will lessen the content both the 3rd parties and wotc deliver to market.
I’m not sure what you were thinking Wotc leadership? I mean, I can’t imagine your first quarter’s earnings, ARPU or resubs are going to accumulate to a QoQ rise. Removing the OGL was a decidedly bad idea, obviously it being leaked made that all the worse because you weren’t able to wrap PR and marketing around it. I can understand your strategic desire to own the market share in VTT, I understand the business logic in establishing streaming revenue rather than POS, but if that was your goal here. I would say you need a much better understanding of your player base, your product ecosystem and your ability to mauver within it. You had a wonderful opportunity with DnD beyond to establish yourselves in the market with a diverse offering adding a VTT as a further product vertical and few would have been able to compete with you as you would have had the brand, the staff and the cashflow to build something amazing. Now all you can do fall on your sword so to speak and walk back this license strategy (swiftly I might ad) and hope your primary user base retains long enough for this to blow over. In the end its your decision, but when you make statement about data driven decisions and then ignore the clear decline in user base and the bottlenecking effect this will have on your funnels Im afraid that statement makes little sense.
This isn’t meant as a rant, I honestly want to know the newest updates, I sincerely hope that wotc will backtrack and leave the OGL 1.0 in place and will not repeat the 4 edition Closed license debacle. I personally would not contribute profits to the product line up if the OGL1.0 is dismantled.
Lastly should this not resolve in a way thats good for the community, paying players like myself and yes even wotc, is there a forum most of the wonderfuls folks here will be going to? I would love to know. I have been reading these forums for quite a while and would hate to loose this great group of folks. Someone should roganize and mass migrate to one place so we can pick up the gaming there?
WotC did make a statement the other day. It basically amounts to "No you (the community) just didn't understand our intentions," followed by a bunch of outright and obvious lies like how they only wanted to do things the existing OGL already does and the OGL 1.1 that we sent along side a contract and a time limit to agree to it was only a draft, finally ending with "thank you for telling us what scares you, but we're still going to replace the current irrevocable OGL."
So basically they know they got caught and are lying and gaslighting about the situation. The closest thing to an apology for their blatant attack on creators was "we rolled a 1".
And now we are waiting for their next heinous act...
It really isnt going to get better is it, rhetoric is no longer a valuable currency. sorry...Talk is cheap... reverse the ogl changes and change leadership. perhaps there is something that can be salvaged from this debacle.
