Honestly, I believe that the upcoming changes will be 5.5 and not 6E. All the playtest material is closer to that and not a system change. If it is called 6E, it will be so similar to the changes from 1st to 2nd. Yes, I will continue to buy the books and materials that I want to.
Yeah, it's quite apparent which fans haven't been through a half-edition update before. LOL! Every edition except 1e had one, this one is no different.
I'm also of the mind that there's not much point voting in a poll (and strictly binary one with no nuance) that is based on a imagined hypothetical that there is zero evidence for. Just seems like trying to stir up controversy.

I take your meaning and feedback, but WotC have already demonstrated that they can and will change the books, and I am willing to wager that when 6e comes out, 5e books will start to be deprecated. I hope I'm wrong.

"Orcs are savage raiders and pillagers with stooped postures, low foreheads, and piggish faces with prominent lower canines that resemble tusks." MM p245 (original printing) You don't OWN your books on DDB: WotC can change them any time. What do you think will happen when OneD&D comes out?
when you say remove 5e books. you mean from people's accounts? or just delisting them from sale?
I am concerned that to push people to 6e books as they are published, and if they are books that specifically replace 5e books, like the core books, they might decide that they will no longer support those 5e books, that they will remove them from the store and the site, saying that they are no longer "compatible" with D&D Beyond, because they want DDB to be for 6e.

so..the poll question reflects the first question? not just delisting them sale, but actively removing them from accounts of people that have purchased them?
If my 5e content disappears that will be the nail in the coffin for me and I would never buy another D&D product in my entire future life.
As it is I am going to see what compatible means to WOTC when they say One D&D will be "fully compatible" with 5e. I have a couple of 5e adventures I should be able to use. Heck - I should even be able to use these adventures (maps, room descriptions, plots, etc.) with another game system If I so choose.
Regarding simple or complex game mechanics: Here we should look at prior editions. 1e actually had two versions of the same basic mechanics that were pretty much interchangeable. You had the BEMCI, which had rules that any 12 year old could master in a day, then you had AD&D, which was, well ... advanced. But it was very easy to use the content interchangably. For example, it was easy to use B1 Keep on the Borderlands (Basic Set) in an AD&D campaign. 2nd edition was also fully compatible with those mechanics as well, so I still used the old AD&D books (The ones with Demons and Devils on them) all through 2nd Edition. Here's a significant thing that differs with the current situation: While I didn't need to buy the 2nd Edition rule books, there was a MASSIVE explosion of creativity in 2e. Strahd changed from a single adventure into a whole realm. Forgotten Realms had dozens of source books published to flesh out every square mile of it. Dragonlance, while the definition of a railroad campaign, was massively creative and had epic characters and stories. There were also others people can add.
3rd Edition and the OGL marked the beginning of outsourcing creative content out of WOTC. WOTC became specialized in game mechanics and mostly recycled older content. Now WOTC and 5e is 90% about rules lawyering. Original content is more risky and that risk was taken by 3rd Party Publishers.
So now we have a situation where WOTC may be able to replicate the BEMCI / 1e / 2e and create mechanics that appeal to both 12 year olds and also rules lawyers. I mean, Gygax did it so it can be done.
The big pink elephant in the room that WOTC executives don't see is this - who is going to make creative, fresh and original content for One D&D?
When the D&D television series launches on Paramount+ and the D&D movie releases at the end of February, all wild speculation will cease.
I agree, for better or worse. Box office sales don't lie and ROI on Movies is pretty formulaic.
If they follow along the path of the WOW movie, it will be "meh". A movie even with a devoted fan base in millions isn't any kind of guarantee. Unfortunately from what I see of the movie trailer, this is what I expect of the movie. Something similar to the WOW movie.
I am doubtful that they will make anything epic with WOTC as guardians of the IP. They would probably be better off finding successful TV series and paying for product placement in those - like with Stranger Things. This just isn't the decade for making epic movies and TV shows. This is the decade for formulaic entertainment that ticks certain political boxes, which appeal to a minority audience but ends up making mediocre movies and TV shows.
Looking at the man who will write and direct the D&D TV Show - It seems his more successful moves are comedies like Central Intelligence and Dodgeball 1 & 2, while his more serious works are kind of unknown. So everything considered, I expect the D&D TV show to be more comedy and not serious. Or maybe like Cartoons like Voltron or the old Transformers Cartoons? Which also kind of makes me think they are going for the under 18 audience - which ties in with them making 1DnD simpler and less complex.
Get ready for the massive wave of under 18 players, folks

As in, if they want to they can remove them from DDB, or make them so they are no longer supported by the character creator.
We have not paid to own these books, we have only leased a license to see them.

I'm guessing it won't be all one thing or another. But we probably should expect things like the PHB and DMG to go away, since the majority of changed rules and features are going to be in those volumes. I would assume that XGTE and TCOE are also going to go away for similar reasons.
Supposedly monsters are getting an overhaul as well - so I would also assume that, gradually, the monster tomes will be replaced (meaning new ones are available, old ones either removed or at best kept as legacy content accessible only by those who'd previously purchased it).
I'm betting the adventures/campaigns stay in place, since they're likely to be the least impacted by the new rules.
But I'm spitballing. It would not surprise me if WOTC gave a hard date after which only OneD&D/6E/Whatever content is accessible.
No idea what happens to characters created under the old rules.
At this time it’s far too early to have any clue as to what will happen in 2024 ( especially the second half when I expect 5.5/6e will actually come out). As we have seen from the OGL “discussion “ a lot can happen in a single month and we have 11-24 of them before 2024 is done. So patience everyone. I am hopeful that we will get to see the 1D&D beta of all the PHB classes and subclasses as well as a fair portion of the new DMG rules. Right now the 1D&D stuff is incompatible with the character creator so I suspect that there will either be a new creator or a massive rewrite of the creator to make both systems work together.
I mean, if the core is the same, people simply won't switch. I mean, would you rather play One D&D which is only going to have 4 subclasses for your class. Or 5e which at this point has something 10 or more subclasses for your class on average. The value offer to switch simply isn't there, especially if the core is essentially the same. Having less options is something that most players aren't going to really care for. Maybe this can evolve over the life of One D&D, but the day one proposition seems pretty poor at the moment.
It'll have 4 subclasses per class at launch, but they're presumably going to make more books for it than just the PHB. I didn't switch to 5e at launch either, I waited until after Xanathar's (right before Tasha's in fact.) 1DnD I will very likely switch to at launch, and simply convert the 5e subclasses over to it.
Why would D&D Beyond ever remove my access to books I purchased? Why do you even think this will be done? Are you not aware of what a business is? It's "give me your money" and you get something in return. If they ever withraw my access to the books I purchased, they'll know they won't ever have any Euro from me anymore. Removing access to my books is not a smart move. Why do you even contemplate this possibility?
Why does this keep popping up? It's not going to happen. It would be incredibly stupid for them to do this. It'd piss off the community and One DND is backwards compatible so it wouldn't even make sense.
Honestly, I believe that the upcoming changes will be 5.5 and not 6E. All the playtest material is closer to that and not a system change. If it is called 6E, it will be so similar to the changes from 1st to 2nd. Yes, I will continue to buy the books and materials that I want to.

Rodney Dangerfield's Guide to Other Things confirmed!
Maybe. I knew that I wouldn't really own the books if I bought them here, so it's up to them what they do with the 5e books. Sure, it would suck but it's not at all like the OGL incident where they acted way out of line.
I guess it depends on how good 6e is? If they pull 5e and replace it with something that's just a slightly tweaked 5e that's not enough to get me excited. 6e needs to bring something really fresh and innovative to get me to play it.
I think there's going to be long(er)-term problems with Wotc and no matter how good the film and/or series, the biggest problem is that they've alienated DM's - the people that facilitate the games and I'm guessing are the "core" of the buying market in general. I'm not going to turn away D&Ddone players from my table, but I'm going to wrap my current campaign when the time comes and shift to PF2, my 5e digital books can go legacy and that's ok. The best thing about the whole VTT market is that it makes playing different systems a lot more viable.
My general belief that Wotc are going to hammer for micro-transactions/skins etc. does nothing for me to invest any more money into their product line - that can sound like sour grapes if needs be,, but - a future of micro-transactions just is not something I'll be a party to. If Wotc haven't poisoned the well, they've very much tainted it for future use, no matter how good the film/series, there's still a bunch of legitimately angry people that are going to actively try to move noobs away from D&D.
