What would be a good sidekick for lost mine of phandelver? The characters are a wizard(offense, utility, knowledge skills), cleric(healing, support, tank), fighter(offense, tank), and bard(skill monkey, face). I was thinking maybe rogue or paladin.
With a group of 4, you should be fine, but if you are looking for a sidekick that fits the adventure, over at DMs Guild, there was a series of products with sidekicks for each adventure. Haven’t read the Lost Mine of Phandelver one, but could be some interesting options.
This will be the players’ first game, and with little damage output, I was worried they’d die (8 hp wizard). I didn’t want them to have a bad experience in their first game. Also, there are 5 premade characters in the boxed set LMoP comes in.
I'd agree with the others, they'll be fine. It's a well-balanced party. Their damage will be good enough. A wizard with 8hp is typical and done by design -- level 1 characters are pretty fragile, and they'll only be level one for about a second anyway.
I wouldn't read a lot into the kit coming with five premades. There's lots of reasons for it, but the idea that you need that many in a party is not one of them.

A cleric and fighter will produce plenty of melee damage.
For new players, probably one of the worst things that they can see is a sidekick doing more damage than their own characters.
The bard and cleric should both be able to provide enough healing to keep everyone alive too.
Level 1 (and 2) will most likely pass quite quickly - the main trick as a DM is not to throw anything at them that will do too much damage with a single hit.
Don't forget that even though the wizard has "only" 8 HP, when that is reduced to 0 then the wizard will still survive until they have failed 3 death saving throws - and hopefully the other PCs will get to the wizard before that happens.
Regarding the squishy Wizard/1st level characters, don't tell the players but you can always fudge your rolls if the fight seems to be going terribly wrong. Once they've levelled up a bit, you can start playing a bit more 'let the dice roll where they may'.

You have a party of four, do they need a sidekick?

Do you mean like sidekick rules kind of sidekick? Or is the a PC, or an NPC? Can you set the scene a little more as to why you need one?

An NPC that follows them on adventures and fights with them.
