I guess the first question is, what do you consider fun? Any race can be any class and do well at it, doubly so post Tasha’s. So, what do you want to do?

Off the top of my head: Monk/Rogue multi-class with a backstory involving a classic kung fu movie "monastery burned down, teacher murdered, had to flee and live on the streets in anonymity while getting trained in other skills until I can get my revenge" trope. Heavy Dex + Wis, play around with sub-classes. Enjoy.

Another possibility is ranger/sorceror if you like fighting and spellcasting. Monk and sorceror sort of have the same problem in that they get something every level ( Ki points / sorcery points) that they desperately need to be successful. But monk is worse as EVERYTHING you do is off of Ki points while sorcerer's metamagic only is off of sorcery points ( yes you can exchange them for spellslots but it’s rarely the way to go). While you can be anything you want as a PC, Drow females traditionally are clerics ( mostly of Lolth, occasionally Ellistraee) while the males are traditionally warriors and/or wizards with rogues, rangers & monks etc a somewhat distant cultural choice.
How much does backstory influence your class choices? I guess it depends how much you want to think, improvise, and adapt during gameplay. Another option would be a barbarian. Work that one out.
I don’t know about others but for a low level (L1-3) character I use the backstory to explain why they have the classes/skills, etc that they have, something of their personality and ( if above L1) a brief synopsis of how they reached the level they are at. In this case I would use it explain personality (using the background selection and personality options), cover their being low status, and how they became a monk and rogue or ranger and sorceror or warlock.
What is a fun and optimized drow build? It just needs to be a drow. No other limits. Even homebrew.

I have no idea drow are just cool
