This is my first time posting on here. I recently joined a group for a campaign and we've had our session zero already to create character ideas, yet our DM has allowed us to flesh out our characters more before Session 1 starts.
So, here's my character: Her name is Shadow, a female Swiftstride Shifter that's a Blood Hunter. The campaign starts at level 6 so she is part of the Order of the Lycan. Her backstory, as simple as it is was that she was born and raised in her tribe of shifters, learning how to hunt with a bow. While she was hunting alone, she ran into a wild Lycan. While she managed to escape, her return to the tribe was met with discord as she was infected. Being that she was now considered a threat, she was cast out. Some time later, she met up with a Blood Hunter who was sympathetic to her situation and introduced her to the Order. With the order she gained more knowledge and training and was sent out on missions as a mercenary of sorts.
Personally, I see her as a bit of a free spirit, wanting to do her own thing, but she feels like she owes the order so much as they saved her from either dying or living out her life as a wild beast of sorts. So, initially, I'm thinking that she is Chaotic Neutral, though leaning into True Neutral as if she had to make a choice between herself and the order, she would probably put herself first.
Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for what I could add to this? I'm a bit out of practice as I haven't done a D&D campaign for many years and the last TTRPG I was in had rather simple backgrounds and wasn't as fleshed out as I'd like this to be. Please let me know.
I think it seems perfect dude, it's not lacking anything in my book. Then again, I'm the kinda person who would do stuff like put "Magical Herring" as a water genesai's backstory
Honestly, talk with your GM, that is what they are there for. What we say here does not matter. It is your GM's table, it is their rules.
You can pick soldier for background. Urchin works too if you have the PHB on here. Or just pick whatever background you like. You can also just create a custom background too, so you have more flexibility with proficiencies, tools, and background features.
Alignment is treated as an optional rule these days, and many do not use them because some people try to dictate and disagree with others and on how alignment works. You need to ask your GM how they handle this. For me at least, if I were to use alignment, it is short hand way used to describe your character, it does not dictate what your character can or cannot do. Alignment can change over time as well. Just because your characters' alignment is good does not mean they cannot do something evil or selfish. Because of the issues it can cause, many people just avoid using it, myself included.
Thank you so much for the insight. The GM seems to be very open to having a bit of character conflict and such. So I'll be sure to run things by him if anything changes. Thanks again. I'm super excited to get back into an actual campaign.
She can be free spirit, wanting to do her own thing and be of any alignment you want. It's really up to you regardless of her alignment if you want your character more often to value her personal freedom above all else and follow her whims (CN) or steer clear of moral questions and not take sides but do what seems best at the time (N). Alignment broadly describes moral and personal attitudes, telling typical behaviors but Individuals might vary significantly from them too and may not always be faithful to them and so such traits could even be true to her regardless of alignment and not always be at the same time, that loose is the concept!
