Honestly, I'd still rather just make the Vampiric Touch attack rather than drop Resilient Sphere early. Plus it'd be a very rare circumstance where combat lasted long enough for the sphere to time out.
The rather rare circumstance of it timing out is the niche situation I was talking about. Simply casting Resilient Sphere isn't niche at all, deciding that you want to cast an offensive spell a round before you want to do so while in the sphere is very niche.

I'll mention this for True Strike, it has one very niche usage which can be very useful although it relies on a slightly paranoid mindset. Don't cast it in combat, cast it in social situations. It's a Divination spell and for my mind is a good first stage of investigation for any character being portrayed as a Divination specialist (whether the Wizard form or some other type), for the low cost of an action and no other resources you can find out if a target is immune to divination magic which means you can decide whether that Hunters Mark is going to be useful or whether it is worth using that scry spell or if its wirth trying ot use Clairvoyance or Arcane Eye to spy on someone. Is it a fool proof idea, no., Is it as flashy as other spells, no. But if you want to roleplay an arcane investigator then it can be a very useful tool in the box of tricks.

Funnily enough, I've found Fireball to be overrated.
Lots of stuff gets resistance to fire damage, and that combined with the tendency for my Wizard (low Dex) to go after the combat characters in Initiative, I tend to avoid casting it so I don't nuke my own party. I've instead picked up Lightning Bolt, which does similar (but less resisted) damage, and in a much more controlled area of effect.
Gonna have to disagree with sanctuary being a disappointing spell. BA to cast, not concentration, all to put a half way decent defensive buff on someone squishy or just in a bad spot. Throw it on your tank that's surrounded by a few and those enemies have to start hitting their buddies with WIS save fails. If they all fail, they ain't hitting your tank. If the tank is dodging, no attack will hit it.
You don't want to cast sanctuary on the tank (at least against intelligent enemies), the tank is supposed to be taking the hits, cast sanctuary on the tank and the enemies will just move elsewhere.
Sanctuary is great if you need to protect an NPC and also comes in useful if the squishy is in need of protection. Say a dragon breath gets some/ all the party and the wizard fails his save and is very low on HP. The wizard is next and casts a concentration spell (say earthbind). Casting sanctuary on the wizard helps keep the wizard concious and concentrating on the spell. (At least if the dragon doesn't get his breath weapon back
