You're going to have to use some sort of virtual table top to show maps to players. D&D Beyond allows for character sheets and dice rolls but it's VTT is still in alpha stage the last time I checked.
If you have a masters subscription DnD Beyond Maps is ready to roll! Just invite your players tro the campaign and then launch maps from the campaign page for you....the players launch it from their character sheets...
Also....have you considered using Theatre of the Mind versus a VTT?
I am sorry, but you really need to provide more information that just 'trying to start a campaign', because that can mean so many different things. Do you mean trying to start a tabletop game and you're stuck on how to introduce your characters to the story? Do you mean you are trying to use Roll20 VTT and don't know how? Or FoundryVTT, or Maps, or Sigil (the list goes on). Each is different, and each will need a different answer.
Assuming you are talking about running an online game, you'll need to decide whether you want to use voice and video to communicate with your players or just text. You'll need to decide whether to do 'theatre of the mind' or VTT (I have found that players younger than 40 have a tough time with theatre of the mind since they grew up with video games and need to 'see' stuff - that's not an insult, just an observation from having DM'd for 43+ years).
If you're are going to use a VTT which one plays a huge part in trying to show you the right steps. You also need a way to create the maps you plan to use (or purchase them, or download them, or find an online source for them as most VTTs don't really have good tools to create maps, they are better at displaying them than creating them).
We use Discord for voice/video, DungeonFog for map creation, FoundryVTT, DnDBeyond for the character sheets, Beyond20 browser extension to integrate DnDBeyond and VTT, and DnDBeyond Encounter Tool for the encounters and initiative tracking.
So, i'm afraid we're going to need more info to answer your question.
don't fret about it too much; you can totally start them off waist deep in a random job, the point of the opening mission is to get them to the point where their characters can have the 'we work well together, let's keep working together' conversation. With that in mind, you can totally start them off in front of the dungeon [or at the bottom of the dungeon after completing the task/scoring the treasure], and use the time they're working on that to prepare the first adventure for a 'main story' or hooks to other dungeons, depending on how sandbox you want your game to be https://routerlogin.uno/ .
I feel like it depends on what your overall goals are story-wise and what your group goals are out of story. combat vs rp, for instance. what kinds of character development are your players going to be able to lean into. https://omegle****/
It doesn't have to be super elaborate. There is a reason so many stories start with a tavern. Or why Elderscrolls games usually start with you as a prisoner.
I have been in campaigns where I and others got an inheritance letter and now had to take over and grow a city.
I have started in a jail sail.
And I have started as a help wanted add for slaying a dragon.
Need further help, look at popular media
The comic Rat Queens starts off with several adventuring groups, including the namesake groups, tasked with some community service after all of them got into a city wide drunken brawl.
Deadpool has a Help Wanted Add in his second Film.
Land Before time its a bunch of kids that were separated from their families trying to find them.
Lord of the Rings the 3 hobbits refuse to let Frodo do this on his own, and the other join to keep him safer on the journey.
Star Wars: Obi-Won hires Chewi and Han to smuggle his group past the Empire.
Any decent heist movie goes recruiting a rag tag bunch of masters in their fields.
I don't know about the OP that started this, but I too need help starting a campaign and I will elaborate.
I go to the my campaign page and create a new campaign or use a premade campaign. I pick either frozen sick or stormwreck isle. I invite players, add characters. Ok. Let's start the party!... How? How do I actually start playing the game. Reading earlier comments I assume a VTT app is needed such as maps. If I could just get some kind of instruction at this point, that would be appreciated.
First of all, make sure you read the rules if you haven't already, as they will answer most of your questions. free dndbeyond version
To directly answer the question, no VTT is required and you can simply describe things. If you are playing in person, you might enjoy using a physical map, or even just figures/placeholders to represent creatures for combat.
Thanks for this information and that link. I have that opened in another tab. Just need further clarification on one thing.
If I click on a character in the campaign, their character sheet includes a "launch game" button and I think that's what's confusing me. Is that feature just for extra flair to use a VTT if desired?
