Do you think DDB will have its own custom digital miniature creation tool for the upcoming VTT or will the just sell premade designs? I wonder if a partnership between Heroforge and WOTC is incoming ?
No one will know this until it happens - my money would be on it having its own builder, though perhaps only rudimentary or nonexistent at release. That said, it it is possible it might also have an upload system in addition to that.
I rather hope they do not just partner with HeroForge. HeroForge’s builder has a lot of customization, but has a real hard time when it comes to more slender body types - the hands are always a little too big, the arms and legs can be a bit bulky (I expect this is due to the materials they work with when you order), and the chest sliders for females display a “90s comic book” level of understanding of the female anatomy. Some of that has improved as their slider system improves, but a lot of it remains a problem that I expect will never fully get fixed.
Wizards, unconstrained by the material necessity of printing physical minis, has the ability to do a better in terms of their actual character modeling. As someone who does not intend to use the VTT, but would use a character builder to help conceptualize my ideas, I am hoping they create a better system than the decent-but-flawed options presently available.

If they do, they're probably going to go for selling extra customization options, though hopefully it'll still share in campaigns, and the base stuff will hopefully be linked to class and species unlocks. It'd suck to be able to play a Loxodon or whatever because your DM has the book, but not be able to put it on the VTT without shelling out extra.
Also, there's a lot of species available, and getting them right and also adapting customization options for them all is going to be a lot of work. It'll probably be pretty bare-bones at first.
I think it would be a good move for WotC to create their own tool for creating mini's for their VVT, I also think it is a fine place for them to generate revenue as it is not necessary to play the game and lines up with my experience of playing at a physical table with mini's where anything is used for mini's. Some go all out with high detail custom resin printed mini's and detailed paint, others use a coin, or bottle cap et al. If you want a highly detailed custom mini then buy one if not just use a free token, just like IRL.

I'm not a fan of the faces since the update either; too many lines on them imo. I prefer a smoother more stylized face for these things.
