Yo! first i wanna say thank you for each and every person on the teams who make or work on source books to make dnd more fun!
idk if it's because I'm newer to dnd as a whole or if this is something others are noticing too. It seems source books lately have been having less subclasses in them where Tashas and Xanathars had 2 to 3 for every class and artificer but new books like bigbys has one and the book of many things has none. I will say humblewood did come out swinging with a ton of them but it's considered 3rd party content.
people who have played the older editions is this a common theme? get a lot of extra subclasses out early then add more in slowly as to not add to many?
It seems pretty apparent that they have been greatly limiting new player options, especially subclasses, in the last couple of years. Many posters (including me) assume that is intentional as they work on the 2024 core rules updates so anything they release is fully in line with the tweaks coming. Given the shortage of player options lately my guess is we'll see something big in that space in 2025 including both new and updated subclasses. They want to sell books and know player options are the big movers outside the core.
I wouldn’t expect anything huge in 25. I figure they’ll want some time to see how the new classes handle in the field, plus they have the DMG and MM coming out after the new PHB. Honestly I’d put it at 27 at the earliest before they do something like XGtE or TCoE.
You're comparing apples to oranges, at least in your stated comparison. Tasha's and Xanathar's are both expansions intended specifically to give players extra choices. Bigby's is a deep dive intended to give DMs extra lore and options for campaigns. They're very different goals, and the content reflects that. Bigby's is closer to Fizban's, that also only gave two subclasses. Meanwhile, since Fizban's we've had Monsters of the Multiverse (which is a different kind of book again) with 33 playable races.
I doubt we'll see a version of Xanathar's or Tasha's for a while. 2025 at the very earliest, 2027 being more likely. They'll want people to settle into the new core rules, and when those sales start subside, refresh the sales with an expansion.
I wouldn't worry about books being short on player options. They also don't want to be selling subclasses that could well obsolete in a matter of months.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
Xanathar’s and Tasha’s weren’t your typical sourcebooks. A lot of stuff that was in both of those books had originally been printed in more typical sourcebooks like the EEPG, Sword Coast, Ravnica, Theros and Ravenloft. What they did for Xanathar’s and Tasha’s was to collect all that stuff and put it together in one book with a bunch of new stuff added to it. That’s what they did for MotM too. They collected stuff from Volo’s and the first Mordenkeinen’s and those other books I mentioned before and compiled them all together. Sooner or later they’ll take all the stuff from Spelljammer and Planescape and Bigby’s and whatever else and put it all together into a single book full of player’s options too.

Well, nothing is really going to be obsolete at this change, since the rules updates look minor and they’ve been emphasizing backwards compatibility.
