I think the regular cover is better, but I haven't really cared for most of the alternate covers. I am glad that they make them though.
Agreed, I actually prefer the standard covers as well. Which is great since I also prefer getting the physical + digital DDB bundles online. (I'll still pick up the FLGS versions as occasional gifts for select friends though.)
Gorgeous! I usually forego the alternate covers, since I like my books to match on the shelf, but this certainly has me tempted to change my ways.
Really interested in the fact the new PHBs depict an Eastern dragon, instead of the traditional European style that has historically graced D&D book covers. I know a lot of folks in the community have wanted for decades D&D to branch out a little more in its exploration other cultures - be it new planes or new continents on existing ones. Here’s hoping these covers portend some interesting things to come!
I am also looking for an option to get digital access bundled with the alt covers but so far the store seems to only offer the normal version. I'm guessing that the alt covers are for your local friendly game store, but sure hope that the find a way to bundle in a digital code as well.
Any word on if the background color of the pages will be a different (lighter) than the standard editon? The browned/yellowed/aged color effect make reading a bit harder for me.
when will this be available to buy via the marketplace? I want the alt cover and would love to have the digital content alongside (just like they offer currently with the standard edition).
any idea if that will be possible? and/or when it will be available? I can't find anything about that anywhere...

The alternative covers are a games story exclusive and won't ever be on the market place. It's a way to get you to support small businesses
It's also worth considering that currently, Alt Covers are in extremely short supply & delayed...and the word is that they're not going to be printing any more of them. I hope you manage to get one of them, but it kind of looks like that's very much long shot at the moment.

Absolutely, I would love if we see some Chinese dragons, some European dragons and all sorts of varying stat blocks for dragons that aren't just "Green dragon", "Blue dragon" or "Black Dragon". Instead, having dragons that are mechanically and flavorwise based off actual legends of mythical dragons from cultures around the globe would be epic.
As for this alternate cover art, I doubt I'll get it but I honestly think I prefer it to the regular art. It just feels less cluttered and has more open space and that's feeling more appealing to my sleepy mind at the moment.

I ended up purchasing the alternate covered version - I think, in person, it actually ends up looking far less cluttered than the regular art version. There is a foiling process on the cover (akin to Magic cards) that darkens out the image some, making most of the greens and browns you see in the printed image blend together a tad more than appears in a backlit digital image. The subdued details produce a dark cave scene--it feels a little closed off, but it does not feel busy or cluttered.
Conversely, I found the in-person regular PHB to be a bit busy for my taste - every inch of the cover is taken up by the scene and the dragon, all of which are depicted with very vibrant colors. I felt this made the cover seem almost too busy as the eye darted around from bright color to bright color. I do not think the art is bad, per se, but it was not exactly my cup of tea.

Perhaps I phrased things poorly but what I meant to say was the alt cover art feels less cluttered to me and I think I like it better for that reason. But ultimately, I buy most of my D&D books Online and don't know if my LGS even has the alternate art so I'll probably just end up with the more crammed regular art version.

BoringBard's long and tedious posts somehow manage to enrapture audiences. How? Because he used Charm Person, the #1 bard spell!
He/him pronouns. Call me Bard. PROUD NERD!

I also wish they would do a second (first?) print run. I asked recently at two local game stores, and they both said I missed my chance and it was too late to order the alt cover versions (PHB, DMG) for me. So sad!

That's just the Gold dragon design from AD&D 2e
I kinda love it. It's cute.
...aaand now I can't unsee that.
Do we know where we can buy the alt covers? All i see advertised is the general bundles for all 3 regular books

Alt covers will be sold through local game stores, so you check in at any in your neighborhood/town to see if they are doing pre-orders.
Thanks! I remember theres a website run by wizards that lets you find your FLGS, do you remember what that is at all?

although a local search for game shops or something similar in your area may prove better results
that a monk and they meditate so sitting indian style is not an issue. that character has no armor at all. clearly a monk.
