it's my first thread here and I really hope I haven't posted on the wrong forum. I'm a dungeon master with the minimum bare experience in the matter of streaming and running games online. I find my current campaign interesting enough that I would like to share them with other friends through twitch for example.
Could you guys give any tips on how to run a top notch quality streaming sessions, please ? Did you already do it ? Any software that you use in particular ? What was your major struggle when streaming ?
I feel myself a bit overwhelmed by the amount of possibilities I have... So your personnal experience would be greatly appreciated !
There actually is a "Streams & Video" Forum channel (listed just below this one) on the Forums page, so I'd go and post there, but here are some questions for items you might want to include with your post:
Do you play in person, or through a VTT.
If VTT, which service or combo (we use Discord combined with Arkenforge for animated digital maps).
Are you looking to record your sessions and post online, or stream live?
Do you have a computer that can handle the requirements of streaming (Processor, RAM, Graphics Card, Fiber Internet Speeds, etc.).
I'm sure posting with some of that info included will get you a helpful response, or at least start a good discussion.
Cheers!

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
Thank you so much for redirecting me and giving me some really helpful tips. I appreciate it !
No problem man... Hope everything turns out for you and you have some awesome sessions!

I like good audio. Good video is also important, but I find audio more important.
I like to see the rolls. Either via the DnDBeyond character sheet dice rolls, or some other tool is fine, I just like to see the dice.
I like battle maps. I've seen some streams from DnDBeyond games that don't show the map, and I'm just so confused in combat. I don't play theater of the mind for a reason.
Ideally, I'd like to see a comment thread for players when they don't need to actively participate or pay attention. They could strategize or make jokes or whatever. I don't care if they participate with the audience; I think watching them converse amongst themselves would be more interesting.
I like a diverse player group. I like this at my tables as well, but sadly, it's not always possible.
I prefer RAW. A bunch of home-brew rules makes it hard to follow along.
A good mix of PR and combat is good.
Anyway, just some thoughts off the top of my head as a viewer.
My group uses Zoom for the audio/visual. We are a hybrid group; DM and 3 players at table 4 remote. Table group runs on camera for map view and another for the people view. Works well for us.

Interesting to have this kind of view. Indeed myself as a D20 or critical role watcher, I don't really care that much about them participating with the audience. Thanks for such an thoughtful feedback !
Thanks for the tip, I only used Zoom for work. I remember it being really simple, but maybe too simple, like less features, less background/green screen capabilities ...
One big tip I’ve learned is to make sure your audio setup is solid—bad audio can kill a stream faster than anything. A decent mic for each player (or at least for the DM) makes a huge difference. Also, having a simple overlay that shows character names and stats can help viewers stay engaged.
Players will behave differently when streaming than in the regular game.
There is value in starting the campaign with a not streamed prelude. But telling the players to behave as if they are streaming.
Do you want off topic chit chat among friends, or a game focused stream. This is a tough thing to balance if you want to optimize the stream quality. Also many people don't want their real names, places or residence, politics, religion, or other things to be said in public. Pretending to stream for awhile will get everyone in the habit of following the rules before you put something on the internet.
Roleplaying Romance or in game prejudice such as "Durn Elf" has very different implications with a group of friends who know each other and in front of an audience desperate for a reason to be offended.
Embracing one specific political philosophy can generate clicks and views. But do you really want to deal with the drama?

It depends on the Drama.
I've had people show up in our chat and lament that we have pronouns on display in the windows with the players and for their characters. I'm not going to stop doing that just because some people have a problem with that.
