Quick question to experts, is an Astral Half Elf possible? I am reading their descriptions and nothing is really saying “no” to me so I think it might be possible? And if so, what race traits would be retained then?
Is the rule we follow for interspecies offspring can be like this: pick one ancestor, use their species traits, but adjust your appearance as you wish.
So, to play an Astral Half-Elf, you just take Astral Elf traits? Can that be done?
So it would be mostly homebrew to create a Half Astral Elf and use their direct features. You can, however, use the Custom Lineage to create any race without using any homebrew, but I don't think it's going to give you the exact thing you're looking for:

Instead of choosing one of the game's races for your character at 1st level, you can use the following traits to represent your character's lineage, giving you full control over how your character's origin shaped them:
Creature type. You are a humanoid. You determine your appearance and whether you resemble any of your kin.
Size. You are Small or Medium (your choice).
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Ability Score Increase. One ability score of your choice increases by 2.
Feat. You gain one feat of your choice for which you qualify.
Variable Trait. . You gain one of the following options of your choice:
Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
Proficiency in one skill of your choice.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for your character.

As for this question, it would be up to your DM and your table (group). This sounds reasonable to me as a DM and I would allow it... but if your DM has some sort of story reasons why there are no Half Astral Elves, I could see them not allowing it and that would also be acceptable in my opinion.
Thank you so much! This helps clear it up a little for me. For context, we are starting a spelljammer campaign continuation of an old campaign and wanted two former PCs to have a kid and that kid is the one I intend to use for the campaign but I ran into the, “Do Astral Half Elves even exist and how do I create them?” Trouble.
Do you think if I follow Tasha’s Custom Lineage, “Scion of the Outer Planes” is a good feat to have for flavour and to balance it out? What other feats could you recommend to make it feel more “balanced” for the specie?
Thank you once again for your help!

A Sun Half Elf (and Half Human - Shuo Descent) that is just ✨Lost in the Sauce✨
I love continuing in a campaign world from a previous game! Scion of the Outer Planes seems really thematic for that choice.
I would also suggest Fey Touched to play off the Fey AncestryAND the Starlight Stepfrom the Astral elf too. Taking Bless with Fey Touched to also play off their "spark of divine light". Not to mention Misty step and Bless are great spells.
As a suggestion for background, there is also the Celebrity Adventurer's Scion if you haven't thought of that already!
Astral Elves and Humans are both humanoid, so by the version of the rule we saw this would be allowed. You could choose either Astral Elf traits or Human traits mechanically speaking.
Continuing in a former campaign world is always so cool to me because it’s like that one scene in Narnia (prince Caspian, I think?) where the Pevensies come back to narnia after a millennia and reels at the difference and the impact of their actions at a larger perspective.
Also, those are really good recommendations! I haven’t heard of Celebrity Adventurer's Scion and after looking it up, I am so convinced to use that background now!! It is so fitting to the character that I am trying to create.
Thank you so much for the recommendations! I think I have a pretty solid idea for my Astral Half Elf, unsure which class yet (could be aberrant mind sorcerer or artificer or maybe both haha), but at least their background and base informations is pretty solid now.
thanks once again!

My go-to combo for Astral Elf would be Evoker Wizard, because both versions of Potent Cantrip (2014 and 2024) work on their Astral Fire (Sacred Flame). In addition, Starlight Step isn't a spell, so they can reposition with it and still cast a leveled spell. The flavor/backstory synergy is great too - they can charter themselves out to spelljamming vessels as mobile artillery, and they can stay conscious all night in case of pirate attacks and githyanki raiders etc.
Astral Elves do not outclass Shadar-kai or Eladrin. The riders on the Shadar-kai and Eladrin teleports are huge boons, and you're essentially trading that on the Astral Elf for the flexible skill proficiency and the chosen cantrip. Shadar-kai are also resistant to Necrotic damage. They seem pretty balanced to me in a post-Tasha's world https://omegle****/.
What it says on the title, basically.
