I may or may not have used a Christmas Tree Mimic for a one off adventure with a campaign.
I had them exchange presents using Yankee Gift Stealing (though not one person stole a gift) and they reached for the second to last box, they noticed a tentacle attaching the box to the tree.
Sure! Why not? Maybe there's some horrible combination of a mimic and a gelatinous cube that just lays on the ground looking like a big puddle or a small pond of water, but once some little animals scurries up to take a drink their mouth sticks to it and they get dragged in. That'd be horrifying!
Could a mimic take the form of a puddle of water or a light source like a lantern??
I would probably say for a creature that can perfectly replicate the appearance of any object, saying that it had some kind of bioluminescence or something that simulated lantern light would not be outside of the realm of possibility. I would say it wouldn't be able to produce an actual flame, so perhaps the DC to notice it is a mimic would be lower, as the characters might see that instead of a flame at the center of the lantern there is instead a flame-shaped appendage producing light.
Could a mimic look like a burning campfire? Probably not.

I can see something similar to deep sea angler fish, the ones with the glowy lure, who's bioluminescence is from a bacteria that lives in it. A small flame in a lantern shape could be a byproduct of its diet. Producing gas or a flammable liquid and a method for igniting it.
Once found a magic bracelet that was a mimic, back in 3.5 days. IT appeared as a Magic Bracelet that could shapeshift into any 1 handed melee weapon, it did extra damage that ignored DR and Immunities. Thought it was super cool, it came with a price. Every day that I didn't deal a certain amount of damage to a creature, it would deal that much damage to me before I went to sleep. Never told my party about it, they just thought it was a cost of the bracelets magic.
Actually ended up bonding with it, and becoming friendly. Eventually with all the monsters and bad guys I fed it, it was able to grow stronger. When my character finally did late in the campaign, the powered up Mimic flew into a Rage and helped the party avenge me. It killed dozens of Zhents, and consumed them. The party asked if it was gonna consume me. And it looked insulted at them, and said it wouldn't. I got buried in a tomb, and the Mimic and its kin remained as silent guards to make sure none disturbed my eternal sleep.

That is indeed a epic tale, to be related again and again, at pubs such as The Yawning Portal, The Vulgar Unicorn, The Drover's Arms and elsewhere.

Ah, it is good to hear that there is another enjoyer of One-Thumb's ale at the Vulgar Unicorn. Though the man charges an arm and a leg for a hit of that Krrf

I recently ran the adventure Blue Alley (Tier 1 AL module) and it has a ceiling mimic in it. My players were terrified of the lone box in the room and the artwork of teeth on the walls. They forgot to look up!
Mimic Beds are good. Especially after a long day of looting. Take off all the armour and get into bed...ouch.
My group was once in a dungeon (I forget which one) in which one of the PCs climbed down a ladder into the middle of a Gelatinous Cube. The PC survived (barely) while the rest of us sliced that mound of murderous jello apart (and the rest of the party gained an appreciation for my warlock character's Eldritch Blast cantrips).

What about a suit of armor? The Shinier the better?

Hmmm...
.a mimic that takes the form of a nice bed with thick blankets, fluffy pillows and nice clean sheets in a bedroom off the beaten track...
In the ancient mythic tales of the Greeks, there was a similar case of an sleazy innkeeper with a 'bed' that was actually a torture rack...
definitely an incentive to recline outside in the nice, soft mud.....
