Just wondering: has anyone else noticed the tabard (also called a surcoat) -- a cloth item like a vest worn over a suit of armour -- is missing from the Equipment list?
Google thinks there is a reference link to surcoat in D&D 5e but I could not open the link its AI attempted to provide nor was I able to find it independently on D&D Beyond.
There are at least 2 references to the tabard in the indexing on D&D Beyond: specifically regarding Holy Symbols as to whether such is emblazoned on a piece of fabric "like a tabard" as contrasted with being engraved on a shield or being carried as a discrete item (the latter being what most probably think of when it comes to a Holy Symbol and certainly necessarily for a Reliquary item), and also, in connection with a specific character of whose identity I am unaware, as wearing a tabard.
SIDE NOTE: As a new person in our gaming group, I can already tell that our DM is not a great fan of me asking questions, especially ones that might tend to highlight his knowledge deficits (which we all have): he was visibly not pleased in a previous session when I was able to answer other players' questions about pole-arms that he did not know about so I didn't and don't want him to antagonise him further by making him feel like I am now quizzing him on medieval garb and trying to bug him with this minutia that he wouldn't care about. So ...
For the time being, I simply noted that my character had 2 cloaks (per sets of Clothing) figuring they were probably similar enough in cost and weight.
If anyone out there has equipped their character with a tabard somehow and has any advice on this minor conundrum, I would be most appreciative to hear their solutions.
ALSO: Is there a formal way to suggest to the game creators that the tabard be included as a Basic Rules (or Legacy) Equipment Item in a future rules recension or update?
Clothing like the tabard is not included in the equipment list because it has no actual in-game effect. It's assumed that a character will wear such things with their armor when appropriate.

A few years back I had a similar question about basic (non magical) Cloaks, and why I couldn't find one in the equipment list.
For flavor on these types of items and if I want to remember what a character is wearing, I'll create a custom item and add it to my inventory. That way it is listed on my character, and helps as a reminder of what they have on them.

It's not in the rules because it doesn't need rules. A tabard is purely aesthetic and so doesn't need to be listed out. It'd fall under one of the clothing option groups such as "fine clothes". It's not listed in the same way you won't find a listing for "shirt" or "trousers" or "coat".

Yep, because you can describe your character how you wish and someone might describe their plate-wearing character as having a tabard over the top.

You can add non-mechanical details to your character even if they're not the in rules. You're 100% overthinking this.

The solution to this non-conundrum is "describe your character however you wish". The rules don't need socks codified for your character to wear socks.

The only references to surcoats I see in DDB are in Princes of the Apocalypse and Wild Beyond the Witchlight, so if you don't have access to those, it's probably why you weren't having any luck
Anyway, as 6th said, it's not listed as a separate Equipment item because it has no mechanical impact on its own. There are plenty of clothing items that also don't have separate listings -- gloves, boots, etc
There is no need to create a listing for it in your character's Inventory, unless you want to pay to have a Holy Symbol on it -- in which case, that IS covered in the Equipment list

If it’s not just part of their everyday attire, I would have a player either add a similar item like a cloak and then rename it on their sheet (by clicking the item and using the Customize menu in the sidebar), or have them add a custom item (by clicking Manage Inventory > Add Custom Item) with whatever weight and cost we agree on.

Yes, Davyd, I admit: I do have a tendency to overthink these things. But, to be fair, there are a number of very particular and discrete items in the official inventory (e.g. pouch for material components, all the specific gemstones) that feed into my OCD tendencies when it comes to wanting to describe my character fully and accurately. That is the point of details, after all. Perhaps it is understandable to you (and others) that to me (and others), it is simply frustrating to be able to go so far and then be stopped arbitrarily. Thank you for your comments in any event.

Assuming since "Legacy" is in the title, i assume it is for 2014. There isn't many rules concerning clothing, so Commoner's clothes and Fine Clothes were there for Roleplay reasons, which is why i guess you want Tabbards. If your really want to add them as an item of mechanical importance, then just alter Fine Clothing into "Knightly Regalia" to mark the players as part of a Knightly order, and give them to the PCs to equip or unequip depending on the situation. They can get into certain places with fewer questions with them.
But if it is just for aesthetics, they can just have them.
