Hi! I don't know how to begin this forum, so I'm just going to go off the bat here.
For quite some time now, I've been meaning to start a roleplay group taking place in a haunted mansion set in the 1930s, which housed several monsters. In this house, players are forced to engage in a battle royale or unlock the mystery behind it, which is started off by the main ghost telling the players "Only one may leave." I wanted to start this roleplay group after dipping my feet into several others made by friends! I don't know if this quite enough info, but I plan on using some elements from D&D, such as dice and statistics. I just wanted to know if any DMs has had experience in writing mystery in their games and if they have any advice they would like to give me? or just being a DM in general, as I am very nervous.
GURPS or World of Darkness might also fit. I would also argue that the battle royals format should be a ruse. It will make all pcs only want to play combatants so lots and lots of concepts wont even be considered.

Thanks!
I know this is DNDBeyond and I really like D&D in general but I think it's the wrong system for your game.
Look at Tales from the Loop, Gumshoe, Call of Cthulhu, or Fate. They will probably fit you better.
