A goliath draconic bloodline sorcerer who hates the source of his abilities, but enjoys the power they bring.
A dhampir grave or redemption paladin who wants to convince people that not all of his species is bad.
A vengeance paladin that wants vengeance against a past version of themselves.
A kuo-toa (not an actual race, but it would be fun) warlock that gets their power from a patron they invented.
There's rules for playing them (albiet as NPCs) in the Monster Manual, so you can repurpose them.
Ah, thanks!

All stars fade. Some stars forever fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homebrew (Mostly Outdated):Magic Items,Monsters,Spells,Subclasses ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If there was no light, people wouldn't fear the dark.
A lvl 6 Halfling Bard, College of Eloquence. Take the linguist feat, with "Criminal" background.
Set your npc up as a journalist of a local newspaper, they inspire the party initially, as the bard is extremely inquisitive of the parties journey and perils. Then, they catch a glimpse of the paper....they're being slandered as devilish individuals invading the homes of the innocent, pillaging and killing.
A human paladin who is actually an charlatan that stole the identity of his paladin savior. He's become used to the powers, but has no clue who or what is helping him use smite or heal or anything else for that matter. Not that he cares. Though he's become something of a do-gooder to the outside world, at heart, he's still a selfish sociopath who'll manipulate anyone into doing his bidding and what's more is, he'll do it with a smile and the most believable lies.
A Simic Hybrid barbarian, bred for nothing more than war. Following a failed excursion, his mind was warped to such a point that he became a splintered personality. The atrocities he's committed are many and he often finds himself attacked by seemingly random people who recognize the markings on his body. When he rages, I roll 1d100 on a homebrewed chart to see what happens. There's the chance of going (more) insane permanently, random goodie buffs and even regaining his primary personality for the duration of the rage. So far, that hasn't happened yet, but there's always the chance.
The exile, he's been tossed out of his home following the forcible changing of god. This one continued to follow the old teachings but was betrayed by his wife who then orchestrated his exile. He's lost his home, his wife and, most importantly, his children. He needs to find backing to even stand a chance to take back his daughters and son, before they too are turned against him. Time limit goal, which makes for a fun time when your character is about as charismatic as a lead pipe and offers nothing significant in return for help because all he has to offer is his spear. At this point in time, he's trying to leverage his role in the saving of an important mcguffin to secure at least part of the help he will be needing. In game, 6 months have passed and the DM has decided that there will be only a total of 12 months before it becomes significantly more difficult to reunite with his kids without too many problems. The clock ticketh.
A Variant Human Undead Warlock/Phantom Rogue with the Shadow-Touched feat.
She was experimented on by vampires who wished to infuse her with the energies of the Shadowfell in order to make her blood especially invigorating to the mad undead. However, the experiment instead accidentally sent her straight into the Shadowfell itself. The energies used to bring her there attracted the attention of an ancient being, Krizerac the Eternal Shade, a Nightwalker said to be so old that it’s rumored that he was one of the first of his kind.
Though Nightwalkers of the Negative Energy Plane are beings of malice and have a hatred for all life, Krizerac has spend many eons in the Shadowfell watching the souls that travel here on their way to the Raven Queen. This has caused him to gain a bit of curiosity regarding these souls and their mortal lives. When a poor human woman is teleported to this plane, he sees an opportunity to get a better look at the plane of the living.
So a deal is struck between them. He would grant her the power to return to the material plane and protect herself from further abusive and harm, and she lets him experience the mortal world through her eyes and occasionally send life energy back to him to feed on through their pact connection (every time she uses necrotic damage, the life energy it takes from a creature feeds Krizerac).
A warforged monk (Probably Kensei tradition); the twist being that he isn't actually doing anything supernatural; instead he's just incredibly good at quick probability calculations. If you've seen the movie "Equilibrium" then you know what I'm drawing from here.
Karg left his orc tribe after figuring out they had a terrible sense of taste in chili peppers, to pursue his culinary dreams without his orc buddies pestering him about how burnt his toast was or how uncooked his eggs were, barely even taken out of their shells. However, Karg's brother, Ranaogark, wished to stay, until figuring out that Karg was right and left to join him. They finally found civilization, and after Karg's 'Gourmet Green Sausage Sticks', they were all bedazzled (or perhaps befuddled) by his amazing dish, and he soon started his own cooking club, advertised all over town as Karg's Conspicuous Cooking Club. Ranaogark was furious at his success, and after Karg decided to have his club turned into a restaurant with both delivery, dining, and lessons on how to cook things like Karg's 'Radiant Rice', 'Long-lasting Lemonade', and 'Advertised Apples' (the third was not even a thing you had to make), Ranaogark opened his own restaurant, Ronaogark's Ravenous Restaurant. Their culinary battles have somehow left mysterious craters, splotches of red on their aprons and kitchen knives, rabid wolves, a curse, and most importantly, a messy kitchen.
Bloke Ural, Blood hunter Rabbit Folk. He was experimented on and has random scars all over his body and a purple gem embedded in his neck which glows when he talks instead of his mouth moving. I've been playing him for about a year. due to crazy shit, he changed from order of the mutant to order of the profane soul in a ******* cool cinematic of all his vials shattering and the gem in his neck turning amber. back story shortened - Kidnapped from the fey realm, experimented on. met an old woman who was also kidnapped. kidnapper experimented with time magic reversing the age of the woman until she was a young child and bloke basically became her father. the child was taken away for more experiments and was never seen again so he broke out and has been on the search for both his captor and his daughter. I really love him. Lawful evil but recently more towards good. 5 years older than race cap due to experiments they did on him.
Dug Buggley Fulcen't - Goblin Blood hunter order of the ghost hunter. twin brother of Bug Duggley Fulcen't (also a blood hunter order of the ghost hunter). both brothers have a negative intelligence stat but dug is slightly more intelligent but they are still both really stupid. they were experimented on secretly via magically tampered food and drink and hate ghosts due to a misunderstanding with a rude ninja they thought was a ghost because he disappeared without a trace. After a couple of sessions dug became a goblin activist because he was being treated like a monster (both I and the player playing my twin were warned we would be treated this way). due to my proficiency in art supplies and my single level in rogue for the expertise I have become an amazing painter to try and spread the word of goblin inequality trying to show we are not all monsters. all of the other player characters were getting pissed off with dug and bug until I showed them this painting I had done of the group around a campfire (NAT 20). made them see them in a different light because they were no longer this idiot goblin whose only use is fighting. we were stupid and sometimes chaotic. but we were nice people who would show it in simple ways like take a d6 rite damage to light a fire to warm another player. they were lovable scamps who did stupid things.
High elf monk. combining the firebolt cantrip from the elf racial trait and the choice of fire damage from "way of the Ascendant Dragon". he was a fire-throwing and punching suave guy in a suit who didn't carry any weapons or supplies. one of my favourite concepts that I have yet to play
Dwarven Beastmaster Ranger with a disdain for sculptures, fear of maps and a persistent bladder infection that spends downtime wrestling his animal companion alligator for money.
Drakewarden Ranger, but you play the drake. The ranger is your pet. You're a canny draconic spirit who conned some rural kid into being your anchor so you can manifest physically.
Pip, a goblin raised by Halflings. Pip is 10 and trained as a ranger, but he's not very good at it. His parents were thieves and his morality is a little... off... but he's not malicious. He's confused by why other goblins are so uncouth and considers nearly everyone who's mean to him a racist, 'And daddy said I should stab racists in the face.' He's trying to get enough money to pay for a resurrection spell for his mummy who died, 'so she can give me a big hug.'
Ah, thanks!

An amazing orc cook named Karg.
Karg left his orc tribe after figuring out they had a terrible sense of taste in chili peppers, to pursue his culinary dreams without his orc buddies pestering him about how burnt his toast was or how uncooked his eggs were, barely even taken out of their shells. "Hero of the Heavens" (Title by Drummer)
Why does this remind me of Buddy the Elf (from the movie Elf)?
