Ok so I have a question for fellow DMs. Yesterday game went great. We had our first session with the dungeon tiles I'd made and they were on their first dungeon crawl. Inside the dungeon they uncovered a hidden tomb containing a medusa. So fun!! They did great!! Eventually killed it 👍🏼
Unfortunately for the tiefling bard and the dragonborn fighter they were instantly petrified but enjoyed watching the game. The tiefling entered the tomb first, instantly caught off guard and was petrified partially in the doorway. His tail was broken off by the dragonborn and then later he was knocked over and then broken further by the aarakocra cleric.
So i didn't think of it till the session finished and i was tidying up, and am trying to figure out what to do. I was VERY kind and they managed to fix the arm and tail and they managed to un-petrify medusas latest additions. The bard was at full health. But as a state he was damaged a lot.
As a statue does he still have his HP OR does he auto fail death saves due to damage taken?? It will GREATLY impact the outcome and the player for the bard is fine with whatever happens he's also super interested in mechanic wise what people think. If the bard dies he's happy to roll a new character. So its all about the game mechanics.
A petrified creature is transformed, along with any nonmagical object it is wearing or carrying, into a solid inanimate substance (usually stone). Its weight increases by a factor of ten, and it ceases aging.
The creature is incapacitated, can't move or speak, and is unaware of its surroundings.
Attack rolls against the creature have advantage.
The creature automatically fails Strength and Dexterity saving throws.
The creature has resistance to all damage.
The creature is immune to poison and disease, although a poison or disease already in its system is suspended, not neutralized.
Based on the above, it would appear that the HP is as normal, they just take half damage, or none if the damage is from poison or disease. Regarding death saving throws, as they are not listed as affected, they would be rolled as normal.
If you are open to houserules, I have seen one where you treat a petrified item as stone, and use the resulting AC ( 17 ), but otherwise have results as normal.
