My Dragonborn bard just leveled up to lv 3 and I chose College of Valor. I'm intrigued with the idea of multi-classing and have looked at Paladin (more for gameplay) and Sorceror (for storyline). My fighting style is much more getting in the midst of battle along with our tank. Given my team's makeup, any thoughts on a good way to multi-class? Either level breakdown with Pally/Sorc or some other combo I may have missed that might be useful?
There's a lot of potential configurations with the class combo you want. Here would be my recommendation which would play into your preference to be in the mix on the front lines but still give you enough spell slots to smite away.
Valor bard 10- Gets you two ASIs, d10 inspiration die, song of rest, expertise x2, magical secrets
Pally 6- lay on hands (30 pts), fighting style, aura of protection, divine smite, 1 ASI, extra atk (valor bard 6 gets you this as well)
Sorc 4- metamagic and 1 ASI
I would break up your leveling to best take advantage of each class feature you want and as much as possibly split every 4th level to not hamper your ASIs. You'd end up with four 1st level, three 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, two 5th, and one each of levels 6-9 spell slots. You'll also end up with 4 ASIs and your stats should be optimized being a dragon born for high Cha and Str.
What features from Paladin intrigue you most? Many of the extra features from valor bard become moot with the addition of a combat class like the paladin. Extra attack, armor and weapon proficiencies etc. I would say if you want to add paladin I would select a different subclass but that is my personal opinion. Would you want to be heavier on the bard class with just a dip into paladin, or go for a somewhat balanced approach? With just a dip into paladin like 2-3 levels taking lore bard you could still gain some paladin spells from magical secrets at 6 and get like divine guardians or something else fun.
With a heavier focus on valor bard maybe some magical flexibility could supplement your combat prowess inherent to the class. Sorcerer for some meta magic and a wider selection of spells, or warlock for some access to some interesting invocations? Both would have options to recover some spell slots.
The other side of things is don't worry about the multi class at all and see where Valor bard can take you.

I would second Hero's thoughts on pally and valor bard having a good bit of overlap. If you are able to swap to lore bard it would eliminate some of that. I'm also a big fan of warlock/pally combos, for eldrtich blast alone it's a great investment.

Anyhow just my 2 cents :)
