Taking inspiration from the awesome anime "the devil is a part-timer". I thought about having Asmodeus get bored of ruling over the nine hells and his incompetent subjects. So he makes himself a new body and disguised as a Tiefling, goes off to explore the material plane as a part-time adventurer NPC for hire.
He has to keep going back to Nessus though, so the other Archdevils don't realise that he is gone and he doesn't want the mortals to discover who he is either.
He also has to avoid being noticed by the other Gods, who might not be too happy that he is galavanting around the material plane and cavorting with serving wenches.
In his Tiefling form, he goes by the name Finn Balor and gives himself the self-proclaimed title of Voidwalker and with the devils own luck; he is quite simply, one hell of a bard!
So any thoughts on how I can turn this idea into a campaign story arc?

You definitely have a great NPC concept. Turning it into a campaign might take a bit of effort. Best I can think of is have the campaign centered around a main town (maybe make it a dungeon town like waterdeep). Finn can be an employee/entertainer at an inn and the players can befriend him over time. From there you can pretty much make events based on the anime (angels trying to get him to expose himself to get their gods involved, devils misinterpreting his presence as a signal to invade, a cult murmuring that their almighty walks among them, etc).
Its a variant of "Seasons of the Mists" from the Sandman series. There, Lucifer abdicates Hell, and goes of to live life on earth.
The gods being bored and living with mortals is part of the backdrop in the Damachi anime.
So it does work. So is it escapism, a vacation, furthering a plot of evil, or tweaking the nose and sabotaging another arch devil with the players as foils?
