For the last few days I've been wondering/asking you guys about which Class I should roll for a new campaign (Probably Descent into Avernus, no spoilers btw XD).
I've been all over the place, considering rolling Rogue, Warlock, Sorcerer... and I finally decided to roll Wizard. Cause thats a Class that I've always been interested about, but I thought I didnt have experience enough to play (played 5 unfinished campaigns, somewhere around 40 sessions)... but screw it, Im going for it! haha
Now that I made up my mind, I'd like your opinion about Subclasses, Races, Backgrounds and General Tips that you think its important.
So far from what I read about, I liked Divination and Evocation for Subclasses. The Races probably High Elf, Half-elf and Variant Human. Backgrounds couldnt settle on these.
So what do you guys recommend and what tips can you give to a first time Wizard?
Background doesn't really matter so much. If your party doesnt have someone to pick locks, you can be an urchin who learned magic from a book they stole or from a wizard that took pity on them. Sage or scholar are the go-to for wizards, but it could be anything really.
High elf and variant human are good races for wizard.
If you do decide on divination Wizard, I would be remiss not to mention the shenanigans halfling diviners are capable of.
You may also consider bladesinging wizard high elf. Their AC can get pretty high.
Orc Conjurer, Courtier Background. The only conjuration spell you're allowed to cast is create bonfire where you tell the same story every night of an Orc clan version of Romeo and Juliet, using your minor conjuration feature to create props and masks as you act out each part. Secretly you were either Romeo or Juliet.
One of the most important things to know if you're going to play a wizard is that wizards can ritual-cast ritual spells that they have in their spellbook but don't have prepared.

Oh, tell me more about the Shenanigans. I'm not very fond of the little races like halflings and gnomes... But I'm curious about it haha
Bladesinger I read a bit, but didn't quite get the whole grasp of the Subclass. How does it work exactly? What do you like the most about it?
Their lucky racial feature lets them reroll 1s, they can also get the second chance feat to force enemies to reroll attacks that hit them. Combined with the lucky feat which lets them reroll virtually anything and the diviner's portent, they have a lot of control over their rolls.
Bladesinging lets wizards get into melee. They get light armor and 1 weapon proficiency. They can also use a bonus action to add their INT to AC and concentration checks, get +10 speed, and advantage in acrobatics for 1 minute twice per rest. They also get extra attack. At level 10, they can use spell slots to prevent damage. And at level 14 they add their INT to weapon damage. Basically a sword Wizard.
Transmutation is probably your most "standard" kind of wizardry subclass, but in 5e I've definitely had the most fun with Divination. The power to determine other people's rolls (or your own) twice a day is just too fun. I've also been intrigued by War Wizard, and Abjuration is apparently good support, but I haven't played either.
As far as spells, if you go Divination, look at a spell from Xanathar's called Mind Spike. It's a damage dealing divination spell that can work well with your Expert Divination at level 6, especially since it can be upcast.

I second everything this guy said.
As for race, just pick a fun one. Go against what you've done in the past. Play a lot of humans and elves? Try a Rock gnome. played a good mix of characters from the PHB? Check out a character from the Volo's guide to Monsters. Maybe Yuan-ti Pureblood or Hobgoblin.
What kind of role do you like filling in the party?
Do you prefer to do a lot of damage yourself? Or do you prefer to shape the battlefield so that everyone else in the party has an easier time? Or do you prefer buffing the party and de-buffing your enemies?
Do you like being near the front lines or do you like staying away from the swords and axes of your opponents?

Well, for the role I'd like to shape the battlefield and do some Damage too.
For the positioning, I'd like to be far away from the enemies..
My opinion is going to be based on the rules and not including optional rules at all. I know your DM might be fine with allowing some things, but to assume it is a faux paus.
Sub Class would be Diviner or one that you didn't mention: either the Illusionist or Abjurer. All of these are in the core and any one of them can seriously alter the situations the Players find themselves in.
Background: I would vote for an odd choice: Soldier, Mercenary or even Knight. Given the long history the Flaming Fist has with Baldur's Gate having a wizard that knows his way around the battlefield would be...interesting.
Race: Since I am not assuming feats will be in use or that variant human is allowed. I would go with Half-elf or Human from a pure mechanical benefit. Go gnome if you want the most omph for your casting stat, but that is just trying to shoe horn *lol* a concept where it might not fit.
For someone new to playing spellcasters, I would say Evocation or Divination are the probably the easier ones to play while also favoring your play style, Vitin. Other than that, you might also look at Necromancy if you have a friendly DM. Your abilities would be straightforward and having some skeletons/zombies/ghouls can be quite powerful. You would want to take a mix of Necromancy and Evocation spells, mostly. If you choose Necromancy or Evocation, you ought to consider the Spell Sniper feat and probably Resilient: CON after getting your INT maxed out.
I’m going to suggest that if you’re starting at 1st level, decide which school to pick as you level up. Every school is great depending on the campaign, but the make up of your party will make some schools better than others for your game. i learned this by experience, I wanted to play a diviner but it turned out that my party needed a conjurer more so that’s what I’m playing.
Whats up guys!
