So I've been invited to play a game where we're starting at lvl12. I've never played higher than lvl8 nor have I played wizard/necromancer. So with this huge amount of workroom, I want the most efficient necromancer I can get.
Additional info: I'm playing a tiefling (purely for aesthetic)
Well yes. But with the base wizard, all the necromancy stuff goes up to lvl 9 I believe, so I'm not sure what other class I should combo with for the other 3 lvls
There isn't a whole lot you need to do special to be effective. Just max out your intelligence as soon as possible. Grab as many necromancy spells as you can. Raise some undead beasties and use them to attack your enemies. You can heal them using Life Transference. That'll do damage to you which is sad but you can then heal yourself using Vampiric Touch. As long as you're concentrating on it and your target is alive you can cast it repeatedly for free.
Outside that, it's pretty simple and plays like any other wizard. Cast spells, rest, cast more spells.
I don't know as you really NEED to take any other class. You would do just fine as a straight necromancer wizard.

"Where words fail, swords prevail. Where blood is spilled, my cup is filled" -Cartaphilus
"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
Yeah I wouldn't multiclass. Higher level spell slots are pretty much always going to be worth more than whatever you're going to get out of multiclassing if you want to be a necromancer. There really isn't anything another class has to offer to make you better at raising undead things. Oathbreaker paladin maybe but you'd need a lot more levels in it to be worth it. If that tickles your fancy just go 12 levels in that.

There is also the create undead spell, which you need to be level 11 to learn. Also, in 2 levels you will get the command undead feature which can be useful.
2.) Negative Energy Flood ( One of the best spells as it can damage targets or heal undead.)
3.) Create Undead ( Aim for Wights as each can create up to 12 zombies )
4.) Finger of Death ( Not only does it do damage, but each kill is a zombie that permanently under your control)
5.) Danse Macabre ( Up to 5 corpses small /medium sized as zombie / skeleton which on end of duration have the corpses return to their former state, useful for temporary reinforcements that don't stick around.)
A bit of a Teaser for when your necromancer decides to make a lair.
im pretty sure if u multaclass into cleric that would be a viable option as u will still get ur spellslots and u can get acess to more necromancy spells. and pick up the reaper class feature for all the toll the dead
Multi-classing to any caster class doesn't increase the number of spells you get, just in some cases increases the potential spells you can take. ( Your spell slots are determined by the multi-class casting table, with the exception of pact magic feature.)

Actually each class of a multiclass character determine what spells it knows/prepared individually as if it was single class. Multiclass spell slots only play a role in casting spells, not learning/preparing them.
So a multiclass into cleric would get them a few more low level spells.

Not quite true.
You only acquire spells based on the class level, so you end up with less spells in that class compared to a single class member of your class. ( But, by multi-classing you expand the variety of spells by tapping the other classes list.)
The point of multi-classing is diversifying your abilities by reducing the upper limits of each class.
The spell slots comment was a disclaimer that while you have access to both pools of spells, you're still stuck with the essentially the same amount of spell slots that a single class character would have. ( Pact Magic being an exception.)

3 easy steps:
That is the easiest way anyway.

Bread and Butter Necromancer spells.
1.) Animate Dead

Mabaran Resonator ( Legendary, Wondrous Item, Eldritch Machine)
Anything that dies within 2 miles of the device is animated as a zombie and is under the control of who ever is attuned to the device.
Wizards wanting to focus on their own subclass should probably not multiclass seeing as it delays your spellczsting power.
Look for spells that appeal to you and allow you to RP that necromancy a bit more.
