My hope is that WoTC and dndbeyond will come to a licensing agreement where WoTC sells the code with the physical copy and it can be redeemed through dndbeyond. Thats the dream, and hopefully by the time 6th ed comes out in a couple of years it'll be a reality, but i doubt it for the remaining life cycle of 5th.

Definitely not going to happen with 5th Edition - see this thread.
It's definitely a possibility for 6th Edition, although it depends on what digital platforms are available and how it works out for retailers. Might not happen though for the same reasons as identified in the link to the thread.

There are 2 problems with that.
Physical products will have to be sealed so people can't steal the code. This will increase manufacturing costs and decrease preview-ability of the product.
The cost of the physical book will have to be increased to pay DDB their share.
Both these factors will drive down sales of the physical books in casual players, which will hurt LGSs more than WotC.
I'd also like to point out that changes in edition have pretty much only occured when there was a change within the publishing company. Might be a long while before 6th edition comes out.
No. There will almost certainly by no change until at the very least months if not a year or more after the purchase in the summer. That's even if they do change anything - which is doubtful albeit possible.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
Ownership of DDB wasn't one of the many major roadblocks on this topic. It only a minor one. The greater issues on this are not resolved by WotC ownership. The other thread explains the big picture in great detail.

I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
Any update on this topic since the wotc purchase of ddb?
Nothing official, but I think there's a certain realism in recognizing that WotC/Hasbro did not just drop $147 million in order to reduce revenue from what's proven to a be a way to make money off D&D.
Based on that, and this far into the lifecycle of the 5e brand, I don't see anything changing until maybe 2024 when there will presumably be a new line of core products that would give WotC an opportunity to introduce a new way of doing business with digital tools going forward.
It is simple. If you have the physical books learn to read them and don’t use digital content. Dndb is a game shoppe not a game developer
