Our group of adventurers is currently in the city of Lundensheim. In the sewers we encountered a ring that had an ancient dark prince trapped inside. Well, after a heated argument my lvl 6 tiefling warlock put in on his middle finger after which he was unconscious. Thing went haywire, the other characters tried pulling the ring off, but it shrunk and wouldn’t come off. So, obviously, after some thought of about 1.3 seconds, they chopped of my characters finger. Great.
Later that session, our lvl 6 druid remembered that once per week he can change the shape of a stone or wood object and that he could make a decent prosthesis. But the we got an idea: what if instead of twig prosthesis, my warlock would have a wand-finger-prosthesis. We went to the local wand seller/maker and he said that can’t be done, that you can’t just change the shape of the wand if the wand doesn’t want to do it. After some failed persuasion (i got a 19 and it wasn’t enough) he threw us out.
But... I’m not satisfied yet. You see, my warlock is missing his middle finger. With a finger-wand i could literally give my foes “The Finger”.
So what do you think, could it be done? Can we change the shape or maybe make one from scratch? It doesn’t have to be powerful (maybe just a buff/debuff; although casting fireball from a finger would sure be badass). My character can go to the large local library and find something out... if I know what to look for.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and I’ll engrave the name of the person that has a solution onto the wand itself!
Nope, it says specifically in the rules that wands cannot resemble fingers because it would ruin the game's balance.
Haha, I kid, shape your arcane focus however you want. I can't even say in polite company what the druid in the game I'm currently DMing shaped his like...
Haha, druids can be like that sometimes alright...
I have 0 crafting experience... so what would I need? My warlock is tied to the Dark one (or the Horned one in our world), so something with fire would make sense.
I'm looking for ways to craft, as far as I can tell, I need:
a formula that describes the construction of the item
the character must also be a spellcaster with spell slots and must be able to cast any spells that the item can produce (and expends the relevant spell cost each day during crafting)
the character must meet a level minimum determined by the item’s rarity
a required gold and time cost to craft the item during downtime (consumable cost half as much as other magic items
And depending on the level, the appropriate amount of gold and time. Is that correct?
That way I could make a fireball wand, I guess... Or maybe something better, some sort of disadvantage debuff as I would be "giving them the finger"...
Crafting is pretty rules-light in 5e, so you really only need two things: an idea, and DM permission.
Ask your DM "hey, can I make X?" Then they'll probably tell you what crafting skill you'll need to use, how much time it will take, and how much gold the materials will cost, depending on what it is you asked for. If you just want to make a simple wand, no pluses, just a spellcasting focus, then it shouldn't take a great amount of skill/resources, but if you're trying to make something fancy like a wand of fireballs, then expect your DM to set higher values on the work you need to do. A good DM should be prepared to "yes and" crafting requests and give fair values, whereas a bad DM might just say "no that breaks the game" and leave it at that, but crafting is widely a matter of DM discretion.
