My friends are currently in the middle of a campaign and they invited me to play with them. I don't know really anything of what is going on. All I know is they have decided, collectively, that everyone will gather xp together, so everyone will stay the same level, since they have problems getting everyone to attend every session since there are 10 or so people. They are all level 3, and the DM doesn't like when people come unprepared, so it was strongly suggested to me that I make a level 3 character and have everything ready before we play.
I want a wizard that uses magic to do rogue type stuff (or maybe a pyromaniac, I can't decide), but I got confused with all the spell slots and everything. Also, I have never played before, so I know next to nothing about how the game is actually played. I don't want to go and have our DM get upset because I have no clue what I'm doing.
What are the basics going into my first session and can someone explain this whole thing about wizard and their spells, spell levels, cantrips and everything? And what skills should I choose? Maybe it would be easier if I were a rouge that used magic to do rogue stuff, but can I do that? Can non magic people do magic? A wizard is just someone who studies really hard to learn magic, why wouldn't a rogue be able to do that?
I highly recommend the rogue-arcane trickster for something like this. Its a rogue that gets some decent spell casting (up to 4th level spells). Its a great both multiclassed with wizard and as single classed so no matter which way you go its a solid performer. For spells you want to pick things that will enhance your rogue abilities or increase survivability. I recommend cantrips like booming blade (great damage option), message, and minor illusion. You will only have 1st level spells at this point so I would go with silent image, shield, and tasha's hideous laughter.
I would be a bit wary of joining such a large group as a new player though. No matter how much you prepare yourself your going to have questions and it would be best imo to join a smaller group where you could get a bit more of dm attention.
I would suggest you ask the DM or another experience player if they will sit down with you and help you generate the character. There a scads of possibilities out there.

Thank you. I appreciate it.
