Howdy, folks. I've got a ranger I've been testing the new Ranger Class Features with and I just hit level three. I decided to give the new beastmaster companions a spin and I've decided to go Beast of the Earth (I already have a hawk familiar). Trouble is, I'm coming up short on inspiration as to what it might be or look like. You folks have any good suggestions or places to look for inspiration? With the mechanics already decided, I'm just looking for some awesome RP flavor to drip over this thing.
Right now about the only idea I have is pulling a Felidar from MTG, as I think they're cool critters. But I'm not sure if I can't find something cooler. So let's hear them!
I'm probably misreading your post. Sounds like you are asking people to help you role play your character. If that's correct no one can answer that because only you can role play your character.
Your hawk can look like whatever you want it to be. It's what means something to you.
If I had a pet hawk it would be fire red at the head and the colors of orange would fade into the wings and then the tips of the wings would be purple. I'd also have to ask the GM for it to have special abilities to change it's color like a chameleon.
Naw, not helping on the roleplay side, purely on aesthetics. Mostly I was just hoping to hear about what other folks have done or see a few cool pictures. Mostly just something to get the creative juices flowing.
What about giving it the appearance of a Monstrosity such as a Bulette and see if your DM would allow a burrow speed instead of the climb or swim speed, or keep the climb speed and opt for a carrion crawler appearance or an Otyugh that acts like a big overly affectionate dog?
Or have a Myconid appearance and be accompanied by what looks like a walking mushroom.

So, first if you want to keep the hawk it would be a beast of the air. If you wanted something more four legged, then I would think it would be a beast of the earth.
Second read, you have a hawk just cause and with the beastmaster you are getting the additional beast of the earth gotcha. When I looked at the us for this I pictured an Apex version of some creature type. Like all the bears had a pow wow, and this was just the beariest bear there. Maybe some bonus fluff features like horns or bits that are more fae in nature. But this could be applied to any creature you like. Maybe a deer or elk version would be like the forest spirit in princess mononoke. A boar version could have multiple sets of tusks instead of 2, they are just extra and wouldn't change the creature but it would be unique from a normal version.

"Where words fail, swords prevail. Where blood is spilled, my cup is filled" -Cartaphilus
"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
You got a flying familiar and you want a land animal. You truly want to be "The Beast Master". Not sure why the class doesnt give you multiple companions like the beast master had (I'm talking about the movie), but whatever. Could be balanced with little effort.
Anyway, it'll depend on locality or rarity that your looking for. Blink dogs are really cool. A bear is always awesome. Giant Crab which no one ever thinks about...except me!
For me I purposely went with a small race so I could use my beast as a mount, but to be honest I went with Hunter cause beastmaster is so lacking IMO. Gloomstalker and Hunter mechanically speaking are so powerful I think Beastmaster (even revised) could use a boost.
Something to discuss with your dn would be swapping the charge ability to something the base creature, like the grapple stuff for a crab, or pounce for a cat to give it more unique flavor. Very much up to dm discretion on that one.
