So there hasn't been any announcement or information about this new source that suddenly exists. I only found out about it because some people mentioned it in a thread. And other than a bug report thread and an information-less tweet someone showed me, I haven't seen anything officially acknowledging it.
So I have some questions that an announcement should normally answer:
Is it official content?
I actually know from the bug thread that it is not.
Is it made by DDB or a third party?
Is Runeterra a mobile game?
[Edit]Yes. Thanks Google.
Is LoR:DToB a living document subject to change based on playtest?
Why wasn't there an article, announcement thread, banner, or video about this to answer these questions before I asked them?
[Edit]Okay, it was mentioned in the June 11 dev update (still not on YouTube 3 days later), but the only question they answer is that it is unofficial.
If anyone know the answers to these questions or have some of your own please post here.
This is about all the official discussion that was given on it. This was developed by people on the D&D Beyond Team in conjunction with some folks over at Riot/League of Legends. It's considered Partner Content, not official. I don't think there really is any "Playtest" period so to speak, I could be very very wrong with that though.
Ok so from what I've learned from the dev update is:
It is unofficial.
It is based on Legends of Runeterra which is made by the same company as League of legends.
That actually doesn't answer any new questions. But what I've learned from Google is that Legends of Runeterra is in fact a mobile card game using characters from LoL.
The D&D portion of the rules and setting roll-up are pretty good. As written, all you need are the Basic Rules for compatibility, and if were someone just delving into D&D 5e, the Bilgdewater setting expansion is a great free product.
The module says that the 3 sub-classes in its rules section should be made available to D&D Beyond's Character Generator soon, if not having already been accomplished.
From my understanding(forget where I saw it), it this is a collaboration between Riot Games and DNDBeyond. There was review and input from WoTC, but it is not official content.
It should be available in the character creation tools, but does have to be enabled like you would Critical Role, MTG, or Eberron content.
They did have a small announcement on Twitter and were planning a Stream yesterday but life happened and that was cancelled. That said, it was a rather lack luster release. Neither side seems to have invested in any form of advertising for it.
I'm most interested in the answer to #4, about whether it's a living document. I like the ideas, but the archetypes need some balancing. The magic items might, too.
I'd like to know if and when the document will be added to the sources menu, either under one of the existing sub-menus (Sourcebooks or Adventures) or under a new one (Partnered Content, for example), and if it will be added to the compendium app. Trying to dig up the document itself is particularly frustrating, especially since nothing shows up when you search "Runeterra."
Also, I have noticed that when using any of the search pages (magic items, monsters, etc), you have to toggle "Partnered Content" to "yes" under advanced filters, which gets a bit old imo.
There was an article on the home page when it first came out, but it's gone now. It might have just been a link to this page.
@Drakus, I honestly don't think there's room to add it to the source tab of the megamenus, especially if they want to add a whole lot more partnered content. If you go to the sources page you can find it there, I think at most adding that link would be all that could feasibly fit onto the megamenu.
Yea it's been around for a few days. Many have talked about it in full depth on other forums for days now.
It's pretty neat. Legends of Runeterra isn't just mobile, it's just a new digital card game as Hearthstone is. Riot is a juggernaut of game development with a massive IP in League of Legends so rumor is they have LoR (card game), a fighting game (in the works based on LoL characters), and of course they have Valorant already.
I digress -
Runeterra is the world that League of Legends takes place in. There's a whole lot of story, lore, and depth when you look into it. Similar to realizing how much there is to chew on in the Games Workshop space. Some see Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k as a miniatures war game, but if you delve in deep, you'll be lost in lore for weeks. The same is true for League of Legends (world).
So it seems they might be gearin' up to introduce LoL fans to D&D, and through D&D Beyond, it markets their (D&D Beyond that is) interface (go buy more core books!), etc. In turn, the D&D folk get to use the IP and world of League of Legends - with the billion dollars in resources that Riot has on world and character design, artwork, etc.
As it stands and to answer your living document stuff, who knows. I like more options and will allow it at my table. I'll houserule and make changes as necessary, but otherwise, for being a free thing, I can't complain.

In the appropriately named News and Announcements forum, we have this:

This answers your question 5.

The timing seems odd, given that Theros has just been released. Maybe that is the reason for the low-key advertising?
