I'm wanting to add a custom homebrew spell that does not require any spell slots to use, but uses an action. It will go above and beyond the standard allotment of spell slots available to me at any level. Is it at all possible to do this with the current custom spells currently? If so, how? I can't seem to figure it out...
So, both? The current workaround is to create a magic item that doesn't require attunement and grants the benefits of the spell.
Eh, seems like a bit of a hassle to do that I guess. Even when doing so, it doesn't really appear correct within the Character sheet. Seems like one of those things that will need to be handled in a future iteration of the platform.
Thanks for your replies though @Matthias_von_Schwarzwald. It's greatly appreciated.
Doesn't use a spell slot? Like a cantrip, basically at will? Other than cantrips, I don't know of a mechanic in the game off the top of my head that ordinarily does this. Matthias_von_Schwarzwald's solution is likely to be your best bet.
Sounds like a Feat or Epic Boon rather than a spell. I don't think you can customize either of those in D&D Beyond yet (and I'm not sure it has Epic Boons at all).

I got this to work by making a custom version of the spell that is a cantrip and then adding that custom spell to my magic item.

Do you mean spell slots or spells known/prepared?
The first one can be solved in several ways. The second will have to wait for the deluxe revamp.

The spell, will be an additional known spell, above and beyond the standard known list.
It will not require a spell slot to be used, in order to cast. Only an action.
