I like the idea of a store account, however, you'll have to keep in mind that many stores will have multiple games going with multiple DMs and players, on the same night and/or different nights throughout the week.
Who would be the DM in control of the Campaign Setting? Would you have multiple DM slots? If this is more than a standard account with more slots then a store could be looking at a pretty hefty monthly cost that they would not recoup.
Every store I've been to offers their space and resources free of charge for AL players. If a store now charges for players to play there (to us D&D Beyond) you'll now have players not wanting to play there because they would now have to most likely pay the DM and the Store each game night.
As far as I can tell, this would not serve the Store (as they'd have a monthly cost they could not recoup). The DM would not have a central Campaign System in their control as they would have to share it with other DMs. Finally the Players could possibly be required to pay for a service they don't know they like yet or want so that the Store could try and recoup their costs, which could push people away from said store.
These are just my thoughts on it though, if you have another vision of how this would work I'd love to hear it.
Maybe a one time fee for the core rule set (DMG-PHB-MM) & then the option to add new material when released for an additional fee. This could then be shareable with x other members. The average group has 4-5 players, so I am thinking 4 or 5. If you run a larger table, you could have the option to add more players (limited amount) for a small subscription fee per extra player. Because people jump in & out of games, everyone except the original purchaser should have the option to transfer their membership to another member. You could set it so only one member of the group would have DM control over content at a time. Perhaps D&D Beyond works out a deal with WOTC & 3rd party publishers that for each physical book sold you receive a coupon for a reduced price virtual copy. Offer extra content ( High quality maps/illustrations) @ a pay per piece rate as well.
I am HAPPY and EAGER to give you my money one time. And the poll seems to reflect that sentiment. I don't get to play often or consistently enough to justify a subscription fee, however meager. It will not be used month to month. But I -LOVE- that I could have a tool to make fun characters. That's my way of dipping in without catching a full game session. That's the most frequent way I'll be engaging with your app, as a creativity stimulant. And frankly, that's what currently keeps D&D and your company in my attention, which gets me to buy your books - you need to enable and facilitate that kind of customer relationship, because I promise you my attention will be swayed by more important things. A slow money leech when I'm not using it will just trigger me to cancel and disengage at some point.
So for my purposes, a simple app to have and save however many characters I like would be real nice. For lifetime access, I'd be willing to go up to as much as $50. Maximum. Or $30-$35 one-time, with DLC for additional content at separate costs when I want expansions. And I certainly won't engage in a subscription fee that ALSO HAS one-time DLC add-ons.
If you want to offer both a meager subscription option, IN ADDITION to an expensive one-time option, that'd be great. But understand you have different people of different backgrounds and availability, looking to engage with this program for very different reasons.
So in summation, offer both pricing models, or stick strictly to one. And if you stick strictly to one, I would really urge you to go one-time fee. According to the poll, it's what the majority want. Those of us who don't play on a regular basis don't want to think about it, we just want to buy a tool and be done with it.
Hey All, this might sound weird but I am very stoopid when it comes to computers, so my questions might seem obvious to you guys but not so much to me. My questions are 1. If I buy this do I have to use it on a smart phone? I have never even touched a smart phone much less used one. I don't even own a cell phone. 2. Can I just use my desk top computer like I do with Hero Lab? 3. If I buy this & run a game, does that mean my players have to have this too? Because one of the gamers said he will not buy it. And he said it quite loudly. If we all have to buy it I think I will just stick with Pathfinder because I can do that on Hero Lab on my desk top. 4. Can you print your work from this program? I would like that security of having my ideas on paper. Thank you for any help you can give me.

DD Beyond will be available by browser and by app, so you can use personal computer and/or smartphone.
As reported in the link below, there will be the possibility to share the digital books between players, but in that case the players need subscriptions. Otherwise the players have to buy the digital books individually.
Thanks. That helps a lot. I think will like it. But on the "printable" question I had, can I print characters I make on this? Either way I think if the price ain't too bad I will get the Master Tier. If it does what they say it does I think it's worth it.

Do I have to buy this for all my computers? Hero Lab, for example, makes it where you can buy multiple licenses (1 for each computer), but when you buy extra content it appears on each computer. I use my desk top when I game from home, but when I game at my friends house I use my laptop. I want to buy the master tier thing that everyone is talking about but I don't want to have to buy a subscription on more than one computer. I just don't have the money.
I've spent the past couple hours getting caught up on the chatter about Subscriptions and payment models and the likes. I think I only have one comment/concern that hasn't already been addressed.
If we're going to have a subscription model AND a one time content unlocking fee, please for the love of Pelor give people with a subscription a discount on the content unlocking fees. Those are the people who are most likely to buy a lot of the content in bulk. And it seems those are also the people who have already been burned by Fantasy Grounds and/or Roll20 and have the physical copies of a lot of the content already. Maybe have a different discount offer for the different tiers of subscribers, but don't make people who are willing to commit to a subscription also pay larger sums of money to unlock all the content they want.
I think this is a great system and I'm really excited to use it for games I run or join in the future. But I don't want my wallet to be punished for wanting to subscribe AND have all the content unlocked. And it doesn't help me, or the company's bottom line to force me to choose.
As a new player (only played 3 sessions of my first campaign so far) and someone who wants to start DM'ing, I really wish we had more concrete info on pricing at this point as I really want to purchase the books for their content (already got PHB but want to pick up the others), but I'm currently holding out to see how the prices are on here because it would be awesome to save some money (possibly) and have an easily searchable database rather than flipping through multiple books looking for a specific thing

If you're looking to start DMing from a module, Wizards has put out a PDF supplements so that you can run Princes of the Apocalypse without a DMG or MM and the SRD covers a decent amount of ground as well to wet your feet. It's a good way to start without sinking money into it. And from what I've read, they are planing a full release by the end of the summer meaning we should get price information soon(ish).

While possibly not the best idea as it would be my first time DM'ing, I was going to read those materials for inspiration but craft my own campaign
According to this interview with Dungeon Life, the ability to share homebrew content is going to be exclusive to a subscription tier.
I'm fine with subs or one-off payments, but I am _not_ fine with locking homebrew content sharing behind a subscription.
If it must be gated somehow, it should at least be a one-off payment, perhaps to filter the noise. Or perhaps only homebrew content released by a subbed account may be verified and featured on the moderated library, but content released by free accounts can still be browsed and used if one knows where to find it, etc, perhaps with community moderation to boot. But having to pay a recurring subscription just to share homebrew content that we can already release on the DMG without such restrictions seems incredibly counter-productive.
Not even app-stores require a, and something so crucial to the community as homebrew content deserves more openness.
Just to clarify, the sharing or 'publication' of created homebrew is not gated at all. All players will be able to publish homebrew content, regardless of paid/free account status. The subscription will be required to 'subscribe' to published homebrew - add it to one's campaign.
I'm not attempting to stifle nor debate your points, only clarify for further conversation. : )

I already canceled my WoW sub in anticipation of this. Hope the cost for this is around the same as WoW.

Don't worry about this: DDB is working and will work by account, not by machine.

I think that IS the best idea, Luke! Happy DMing!
Sounds good to me
