It's not free and the release is early access which isn't the whole game yet. Same price and no extras with early access.

many people play a game in early access, and get burned out on it before it actually launches. It may seem like fun to play it early, but there is a lot of value to waiting for many people. there will also be lots of bugs and many things will change.
They're already looking into console controller schemes for use on PC and Stadia (which is great for people like me who can't play too long with a mouse/keyboard). It's not in the game yet and likely won't be on the full launch, but once they have controllers working with it, I would feel safe to bet that they'll hand it over to a company to put (port) it on consoles.
So, don't count yourself out, yet.

Early access also limits what's available to play. The whole campaign is not playable until the official launch. I seem to remember something about "Act I" being the furthest one can go, but that was a while back and I am still desperately trying to avoid spoilers while getting info.

Larian released DOS2 on console, and the controller scheme was honestly fantastic. Even had a switch release. I'm confident that this game will release on console, probably not early access but I would not be surprised at all if the full game is released on PC and console at the same time.
I was very much anticipating this, and now with two days under my belt of playing it....well I'm a little underwhelmed. I know it's still early access but I really hoped for more than just a Divinity re-skin. I like that they incorporated a lot of 5e but there's still a lot lacking from my perspective. I'll stick with it and hope it gets better once full release is achieved but my enthusiasm has been dampened a bit.
You can definitely tell it's early access. Lip animations in the cinematics frequently bug out, sometimes voice over is missing, loading screens disappear when only half the scene is loaded...
But it's already an awesome game if you're a bit patient. :D
I just really hope they implement WASD controls in the final game so we can walk around the world in 3rd person.
So I was curious about the game and not a Baldur's Gate 1+2 vet. People not liking the game, at least the ones who can write complete sentences, or full blown game reviews, seem to be seeing a disconnect from the Baldur's Gate world they thought they'd be returning to. I read a really detailed review where the critic lamented that the other characters in his party demonstrably hated him, and the default moral mode of NPCs and such was nihilistic. I guess the original had some signature characters who were a bit more swash buckling and added some humor to the story. This one is more grim dark and edge lord? Anyone able to comment on that?

The original Baldur's Gate characters didn't really have personalities. That was very early in the days of coding AI interactions for party members in video games, so there wasn't much there beyond Minsc being boisterous, Imoen being incessantly cheerful, and Jahira complaining all the time.
As far as BG3 goes, it appears that most of the currently available characters are evil, so yeah, probably going to be nihlistic. Also, this is the first D&D video game to be given an M rating due to the level of violence, blood, the horror themes over what's happened to your character, and nudity and sexual content.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
So Minsc is a character from comic books also based in Baldur's Gate, but not really tied into the "lore" of the video games? I actually remember listening to some lore recap on YouTube going over both games, and I don't remember him popping actually. Here's the review my phone's feed threw at me. It's from ArsTechnica, which I don't regularly read.

I managed to kill my companion cleric "Shadowheart" because I started as a Gith and decided she was bluffing when threatening me although I fried to save her earlier.
She wasn't bluffing, she tried to kill me and my Githyanki Eldritch Knight now has no cleric in the party but at least a nice looking chain shirt for herself. :D

Minsc debuted in the first Baldur's Gate game, but neither he nor any of the other potential party members (of which there were many) had any actual relevance to the plot. Baldur's Gate 2 improved things to some extent, but the story was still seriously all about your character and everyone else mostly just had a few side quests that their presence triggered.

Its using 5e D&D rules. Anyone else excited?
Is it free? If so I might check it out. If not, I'll wait for review before paying.

The game looks really cool, but since I'm a console player I won't be able to play it.
Still, I'm excited to see how other people like it.

I heard the cut scenes are very cool especially the starting cut scene.

I've been mildly amused by the people who are upset that despite being produced 20 years later, it's not using the modified 2E rules from BG1 and 2.
