A new sourcebook has been revealed, and the mist beckons...
It’s a gothic-horror sourcebook returning to Ravenloft...even better, it contains up to 30 “Domains of Dread”!
This means that Strahd is potentially not the only Dark Lord who gets to mess around the party anymore...likely, we’ll be getting some old favorites like Lord Soth, and Vecna...and some new ones.
Plus: the “College of Spirits” Bard & the “Undead” Warlock subclasses will both be officially published.
Very excited about that...I loved both of them to bits.
...here’s just hoping they A) made the Spirits Bard a bit smoother to play, and B) made sure that the Undead Warlock didn’t get absurdly too powerful...looking at you, necrotic-damage overload.
So I thought with those two new gothic subclasses now officially coming to light (ha ha...no)...why doesn’t everyone share their ideal party composition for a gothic-horror adventure?
Bring in your Monster Slayer Rangers...your Phantom Rogues...your creepy Great Old One Warlocks...
...or flip it; inflate your party with Light Clerics, Devotion Paladins, and Sun Soul Monks and light Ravenloft up like a Vegas strip.
Personally? I can’t wait to do a “Bloodborne” styles adventure with a party of monster hunters..****y to blindside them with cosmic horror.
Hm, honestly I have a lot of ideas for gothic or dark themed characters. Here are two.
A Black Dragonborn Shadow Sorcerer, as Black Dragons are known for dabbling in necrotic magic so a Black Dragon looking Dragonborn with Shadowfell magic would be cool.
A Kenku or Aarakocra Swarm keeper Druid. There swarm would be crows, ravens, or owls.

Had a Black Dragonborn tavern keeper character one time...if you caused problems in his bar; he’d use his breathe weapon to put acid in your drink.
As a DM, I don't care for the idea of telling players "you're going to Barovia/Ravenloft", and then receiving a party that consists of absolutely, literally, nothing but Abradin van Hellsmite, Righteous Hunter of All Things Evil, copied across however many players there are in a campaign. My ideal preference would be for players to have no idea they're about to pay a visit to the land of Gothic darkness and play regular-assed characters.
...buuut as a player I know that would suck, and even as a DM I know better than to bait-and-switch campaigns. So if the party decided to play literally nothing but stereotropified vampire-hunting Righteous Crusaders, there would simply be a whole lot of Ravenloft critters that know exactly how to deal with their most common Lawful Stupid nemeses. Still. I can't help but pull for seldom-seen, underappreciated classes that nevertheless would do very well in the format, such as Cobalt Soul monks, Horizon Walker rangers, or some of the new shinies like Wildfire druids or Wild Magic barbarians.
I've got a Monster Slayer Ranger --Nathaniel (Nate) Wesson-- ready to go. He's a human Monster Slayer from a family of Hunters who is searching for his missing father and brother. He's totally absolutely not based on Dean Winchester from Supernatural, I swear.
I also have a Reborn Hexblade named Elric Gray. Originally Dorian Gray, when he did finally die and his portrait revealed him for what he truly was, he ended up in the realm of the Raven Queen. She gave him a task: bring her the souls of the Dark Lords of Dread. If he does, she will let him go back to his life and live out the rest of his days as though he'd never had the portrait made. After all, he'll come back to her soon enough anyway.
There's Elizabeth Winter, an Oath of Devotion Paladin based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The Chosen One, she is destined to fight the forces of evil her whole life. All she wants to do is be a normal person, but she knows she's the only thing that stands between humanity and the Dark Lords.
Finally, there's Tess Lang, an Alchemist who accidentally created a horrifying monster. Scared of what she'd wrought, she abandoned the creature, who now haunts her and has sworn revenge on her. Obvs based on Frankenstein. And yes. I know one of the Dark Lords is as well. I imagine they'll have a lot to talk about if/when they meet.

Fun Fact(s):
A group of crows is called a “murder”.
A group of ravens is called a “conspiracy”.
A group of owls is called a “parliament”.
...the horror. ; )
So if I have a flock of all three, it would be a murderous parliament of conspiracies. Lol.
