I am testing the waters a couple months in advance. I will wait to "officially" start after the release of Monsters of the Multiverse so as to not let you feel shafted if there is something you would rather use in that iteration. Plus I could use the extra time to really get to understand the players. I have the frame works for a campaign but for sure want to do my due diligence with the rules and prospective players. You guys will be my babies :) Ergo I want to properly flesh out your back stories and integrate your expectations of themes - combat / rp %. As well as if the players want to use r20 or do entirely theater of mind. Also part of the extended time frame is to allow time to get up to speed with technology. r20 (if used), discord, twitch / youtube (if used), etc. As I am a 31 man who is being haunted by their tamagotchi, furby, and neopets abandonment issues. So my track record with technology is flawless ;)
Few "rules" if you want to call them that:
1. I want to play w/ webcams. Be it discord, zoom, etc. Not too tech savvy so I am sure there is other jazzier things that are easier to use. It feels much more collaborative when you can incorporate physical humor and body language with role play.
2. Reskin to your hearts content. Want to play an anthropomorphiccharacter with the statline of a Vedalken... You bet your punk bottom you can do it. Always wanted to play a sassy, meat and potatoes tree who don't need no man? There is a place for you.
3. If you are a hardcore parkour min / max combat all the way player I am admittedly not the optimal guy for you. I intend to become much more versed in the rules as to accommodate players who do prefer that but just throwing it out there and let it marinate.
4. Games will be Sunday mornings EST. There is a surplus of evening games but I would like to wake up... drink coffee... and shepherd the nerd herd through some d&d all the while the sun is up. Plus I'm an ancient, office hours old man. Had to hang up those late night cleats with you digital athletes. As well if the off chance its desirable to play later, or just talk shop afterwards it leaves the option to do so. As opposed to late night games where people often boogie right after.
5. Players will roll for HP upon level gain. Initial character stat lines will are TBD. Depends on if players want to individually roll, roll once as a collective, or do point buy for ease. Campaign will start at lvl. 1... fun, fun, fun ;) and will be milestone exp.
6. Not so much as of rule as its more of a preference / pet peeve. I will for sure be incorporating narrative threads, npcs, or by some other means to have the abilities your class gains feel impactful and less random. It always irked me if a character gets (lets say hexblade warlock) a class ability or thematic spells (like accursed specter lvl. 6) and absolutely nothing in the story or rp has built up to that... It's easier said than done but I'll try my little heart out.
7. I am not particularly strict or care to shut up shop if you guys / gals get creative. I want to incentivize you when you do jazzy things or get really creative with the material components of spells. It will be a low pressure game so don't feel obligated to chef up only optimal gameplay
8. There will be swearing and adult themes so age isn't restricted but prefer older players. Plus it makes it easier when making 90's / 2000's references if I don't have to say "back in my day"
9. If you need a reference for tone or influence for the type of game I want to run... (again heavily influenced on what the players will want / their back stories include) I enjoy Dimension20, Adventure Zone, Dungeons and Daddies, Crit Role. I think they do a great job allowing a very wide spectrum of themes / roleplay moments interspersed with countless funny moments. I do think my weakest link would be an exclusively murder mystery.
10. This will be a weekly, long-term campaign. It's the internet and people have lives. Not expecting flawless attendance but hoping for consistency.
Now that we got that snoozefest how to lose a reader in ten rules b.s out of the way...
The campaign will be based loosely off of the folklore of tribal civilizations and the influences of colonization. I.e some of the beliefs of pre-colonial Philippines, Celtic, Greek / Roman, Afrikaans. I am not a history major so it'll be modernized interpretations. There will be large primordial beasts, mundane day to day routines, etc. that influence the natural phenomena of old :) As well the influence of "civilized" societies conflicting with the ways of the the local humanoids /creatures / flora / fauna. All the while balancing the fickle alliance with primordial creatures that regulate the natural order. Don't worry. I won't be laying out spread sheets or expecting anyone to adopt certain terminologies / languages. Harpies will be harpies, etc. Just they will be reskinned to match closer to the Aswang of the Philippines.
The world will have several moons and suns. Large phoenix like Birds and roided out Gyarados (sorry magikarp, we love you too) that eat the moons every night and regurgitate the sun to balance the day cycles. Common rituals and ceremonies that range from celebratory to keeping the bad juju at bay. The players will be introduced to the Shelf... a large cliffside estuary where rivers of primordial magics flow into the grove / port ocean. As well as a vertical vineyard / mangrove forest overseen by Harpies, Aarakocra, Tabaxi, and other "vertically inclined" creatures. Rolling hills of celestial rice terraces and a giant spiraling waterfall (think a massive spiraling water slide) called the Spyre. Where the wealthy / spiritual inhabit and dictate the resource management (https://youtu.be/THcKJpXwqVM) if you need a visual reference. (just atop a spiraling structure) The Shrine, a dense fantasy architectural melting pot village where numerous clans, tribes, families, barons, etc. cohabitate and conflict. The Sunken Whale, a do it all floating druidic grove ship with colorful forests, Swiss Family Robinson's style tree houses, a grotto, a coral reef hull with exits and entrances for the aquatic creatures.
Npc's will be more comedic than Game of Throne'sian but if that is the tone the group wants I will pivot. Though the game is a tropical setting I do want to emphasize just about anything goes. Do you enjoy the folklore of an arctic culture...? well with enough digging I'm sure you and I can chef up a fun way as to who / why there would be snow / tundra in the area. Though I will try and stray away from sci - fi and guns and lean into more the primitive / folklore fantasy. If you can steampunk some stuff up its HIGHLY unlikely I will shut you down. You want the shrunken heads of your ancestors / enemies to function like 90's Hit Clips... Inspiration my good person... inspiration for everyone at the table.
I do want to stress I am in no way shape or form a voice actor, actor, or author but I will try my best to always lean into "yes and" and will always meet you half way with silly voices. The world will be shaped by the players influence. So if you adore any specific folklore or even a trivial belief / explanation of any cultures have had I will alter accordingly. It could be large scale like a historic monster causing tsunami's if displeased with offerings to something as small as giving food to a bat gives you good luck, better harvest. Part of the interim / time between now and the official start is to let the players leave their fingerprint on rituals, customs, architectural influence, npc's, etc prior to starting.
I am aiming for 4-6 Players... A co-dm or anyone just interested in helping with artwork, advice, suggestions, rules lawyering, or helping with r20 / combat encounters while I learn would be muy clutch-o. Even if you just wanted to spectate to see if it crashes and burns ;) I'm more than willing to commission an artist for character / landscape art. The session negative 0 will last a while as we draw closer to May. I apologize if waiting until then takes this off the table... totally understandable.
