I'm a player with a couple characters I'd like to try out, both mechanically and characteristically, both of which are Volo's Races (Hobgoblin and Firbolg), and I do have my own resources on this site. I'm mostly a DM so I don't get much of a chance to play. I'm available in the next few days, and I'd love to drop in on a session or two if someone would allow me. Just message me and let me know, thanks!
Here's a brief description of each character, if you seek to weave it into the narrative in some way or find an opportunity:
Boruse
FIGHTER (Arcane Archer)
A Hobgoblin exiled from his stronghold home as a young warrior. He spoke up against his uncle, a renowned general and master of warfare. As punishment, they sent him off to hunt and return the head/stolen possession of a terror to their land. Many laughed, believing it to be impossible, but Boruse never stopped training and plans on hunting until the end of the world to return home and prove he was worth taking seriously, even after twenty years.
Boruse isn't a pushover, is fairly stubborn in his ways, but doesn't ignore the respect someone can command or their usefulness. He can take some getting used to, but overall he'll have anyone's back as long as he can trust and know they have his.
Goath
PALADIN (Oath of Ancients)
A Firbolg born to a small clan deep in an isolated forest, miles from the nearest town and only the lost have found. He was a gatherer, saying prayers to nature and collecting their bounty as he would go on a month-long expedition around the forest in honor of it. Upon his most recent return, he found the clan's encampment ravaged and abandoned. No bodies, and no material possessions left. Concerned and confused, he maintained the forest himself until it slowly died away. In nature's last breath, he heard a voice speak to him, telling him to take the root of the greatest tree and find somewhere in the world to place it, so that new life can be made. He took this on as divine guidance, tucking a small piece of the root of the largest tree into a pouch around his neck, journeying the world for the perfect place, and experiencing it for the first time. He's a gentle being, but he's no stranger to a fight when someone is in danger. Every new flower he meets, he says a prayer, and adds it to the ring of flowers in his shaggy, curly hair.
Seeing how your wanting to use monsters as your characters you will have a very hard time finding a game to join or be invited into....the reason why i say this is for three reasons.
First reason, if you truly want to find a game to join, then you will need to choose or create a character that is accepted. Examples of races / classes are below
Most DM's will NOT let you use a monster / enemy as a member of the group.
Secon reason, the other party members characters and your character would be fighting against one another seeing how you chose an enemy / monster as your character..Every character would be against you..personally i dont see a good outcome...that would be like having medusa as a team mate...or having an evil necromancer in a group of good characters....im sorry but any DM who allows you to be an enemy / monster in a adventuring party would be making a huge mistake....good fights evil...simple as that.
Third reason, if you play an enemy / monster then things wont work out because most players wont want to play with you until you chosen a race they can get along with....imagine TIAMAT with a group of adventurers...it just wont work....evil and good dont play well together....thats why they call them enemies....
Last reason, your character would never be trusted....Why? Because Evil beings always are into things for themselves...the whole point is your monster / enemy would only slow the game down alot....your better off using a character that works well with other races
I find it funny that you’re so uppity about your standards that you spent the time to post about it, but I’ll tell you why you’re wrong.
1. Firbolg aren’t considered a “monster” race, and I don’t think a Hobgoblin is theoretically any worse than a half orc. They won’t be right for every game, sure, but that it’s just a flat no from every DM ever is pretty damn naive. I mean... Driz’zt AMIRITE????
2. This one is definitely a possibility, but the OP didn’t really come across as a murderhobo type player. I really dislike that every race is just broken down into a stereotype for halfass DM’s. It really makes the world shallow. Coincidencally my game has an evil necromancer in a good group, granted he’s Thayan in my Thayan adventure...
3. Alignment isn’t always an issue, there are some that just won’t be compatible but someone who is LE or NE may fit in just fine. Go ahead and tell me again how your Chaotic Good Hero who wanders the countryside breaking into dungeons and spree murdering is morally superior again?
4. Not necessarily and slow down what? It’s a roleplaying game, there’s no timetable...
Tends to doesn’t mean always. If it did, Driz’zt would be evil, Nott would be evil. It would also mean every elf ever was chaotic good and every dwarf ever was lawful good. This is a big sticking point, cultures do tend towards a certain way of life but they can change and an individual can differ, especially when separated from said culture... I.E. an adventurer. I watch stream after stream with Drow, Duergar, Grung
Good an Evil NEVER team up? Tell that to Goku when he teams up with literally any other character in Dragonball? How about his parallel? Superman teams up with Lex Luther and several others. Xavier & Magneto, Spider-Man & Doc Oc or Black Cat, Sabretooth & Wolverine, Reed Richards & Dr. DOOM, Sisko & Gal Dukat/Garak, Picard & the Romulans, Kirk & Klingons, Rey & Ben Solo. I could go on for a long time...
I think what you’re trying to say is monster races and evil alignments can complicate things. It’s still very dependent on the player, DM & game tho. While I’m sure people have been griefed before, I don’t think many D&D players want to pop a CE character into a campaign just to be a ******, that’s what GTA & CoD are for. I tend to think as long as people are willing to play in a group setting and have a good backstory (reason) there’s very little off the table. They will still have to deal with prejudices both from PC’s and NPC’s but it isn’t that overwhelming a hurdle. I’ve played for a ton of different DM’s and I’ve run a lot of different editions and games and never really seen any issue with monster races (outside of ECL in 3E) being a flat no. It’s a fantasy game...
You can argue the Star Trek stuff, but it was more on the point of an entire race. Romulans, Klingons(at the time) Borg for Voyager were all considered evil. I didn’t include Batman because I consider him LN.
