Waterdeep, The City of Splendors, where a grand tale is about to unfold...
Your tale, in fact.
This story will take you all over the city meeting new characters, some tempting and alluring, some shady and of questionable intent. Each new event will take you further and further down streets filled with wonderful stories and back-alleys of masks and deception. Will you be able to uncover the forces behind the events that are threatening to destroy the city? The story is yours to take where you will as it entirely revolves around your characters and their growth! This game is about your characters as a group and how they influence the environment around them. The city of Waterdeep has many events and characters to discover!
The goal of this game is to run numerous small stories primarily revolving around your individual characters and the impact they make on the city over the course of a little over a year in Waterdeep. Each story will be roughly 1 session long, with a few being longer, and after each the characters will level up. Between each of these sessions, the characters will have a varying numbers of days worth of down time for activities such as crafting, making money, earning faction reputation, making new character connections, and so much more. Before the first session, I'll be speaking with each player individually to better help your characters be established within the greater story. This means that your character will know about certain NPCs, rumors, and lore within, and around the city based on your race, class, background, and faction. What you know may be very different than what I tell another player so it'll be up to you to investigate which information is correct.
About Myself I'm Atomis and have been playing D&D 5e for the past 10 years. Most of my experience has actually been as a DM with running anywhere from 2 to 6 games a week. I've had a lot of experience teaching over 400 new players and love seeing what characters and stories people create. To me, D&D is more like a group story-telling session than a game, I have met so many wonderful people over the years and look forward to meeting many more. In 2019 I was working at a local game shop running 3 games a week and leading workshops on everything from how beginner character creation to how to run a game and DM. Through the game shop I was offered an opportunity to be featured in an article by the Washington Post about the rise in popularity of D&D and my love of the game. I always tell players that it's your job to play what you want and have fun, it's my job as the DM to make it work within the game. I consider teaching new players about the game as my specialty as I've spent much of my time as a DM in sharing my passion for D&D with people. I remember when I first started how daunting it was to try and learn D&D on my own and how hard it was to find a group so I understand that everyone needs to start somewhere.
About Your Character - As a Dungeon Master I put a large focus on role-playing as I think the real character growth comes from the interaction between player characters as well as NPCs. As combat can cause unnecessary slowdowns during game play, I try to make sure that the combat you experience is there to push the narrative and not simply to waste time as filler. - Please remember that the information you have as a player isn't always the same information your character has. Just because you as a player knows that there is a goblin around the next corner doesn't mean that your character would be able to see that threat. If you need help determining your character next course of action, just ask the DM or your fellow players for advice. - While I love encouraging creativity in my players, I only allow the use of races, classes, and backgrounds that are provided by the official 5th Edition source books and not Unearthed Arcana because I want to make sure that character creation is as fair a process as possible for newcomers who may not have access or an understanding of the vast lore in the D&D universe. The following books are allowed: Player's Handbook Dungeon Master's Guide Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide Volo's Guide to Monsters Xanathar's Guide to Everything Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes Elemental Evil Player's Companion Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything Candlekeep Mysteries Fizban's Treasury of Dragons The Wild Beyond the Witchlight Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse - This game will be played exclusively through Discord using a “Theater of the mind” play style, you are welcome to roll your own dice at your desk or any other method of rolling and communicate your rolls. If you need a character sheet PDF I have several I may provide upon request. - We'll be using the point buy system with a standard 27 points to determine ability scores as I believe this is the most fair method for beginner and advanced players. I'm more than happy to offer help or advice on getting your stats just the way you like them so please ask! - Character advancement will be handled by the Milestone system instead of experience. For anyone unfamiliar with this system, it just means that everyone will level at the same time at the end of each chapter instead of having to crunch numbers after every battle. - Character Backstory: I'd love to hear about your character and any ideas you may have about tying the character into the greater story. I can't make any guarantees that I will use everything you provide me, but I will read it and be happy to discuss it with you if you would like my advice or suggestions on how to fit the character better into the Forgotten Realms lore. As a role player myself, I completely understand how important character can be to someone and how much you may care for that character so I will always ask your permission before changing anything to fit the story. Please feel free to provide me with as much or as little as you like on your character!
About The Players - Please be respectful, we're all here to have a few hours of fun in our normally hectic schedules of work, school, and family. If you don't have an understanding of 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons rules and lore, don't worry, it's not the end of the world and you're not disqualified from play. Please let me know before your first session and we can discuss how to keep your time enjoyable and fun. - If you are unable to make the session I would appreciate at least a few hours of notice to better prepare for the other players. - D&D is a team game so cooperation is key to keeping the game running smoothly. Making a decision as your character is always encouraged for role play, but keep in mind that it can sometimes pigeon-hole your gaming experience, if you run into a problem feel free to ask me (the great-and-powerful DM) for advice, I'm here to help.
General Rules - I generally will not allow PVP, meaning that players will not be able to attack each other in any way that damages or hinders any player involved. If players are just roleplaying and it doesn't seem like there will be any meaningful harm against the characters, I will ask all players involved if they allow this action against/towards their character. - The DM is not only the storyteller providing you with an entertaining and enjoyable experience, I'm also the referee responsible for keeping this a clean and civil environment. **Any bigotry, prejudice, hateful language, or harmful rhetoric will not be tolerated.**
If you've made it this far, it must mean that you find something about my campaign really interesting, and for that you have my thanks and appreciation. This story means a lot to me as a storyteller and every time this story is told it evolves in new and unexpected ways. I wish you the best of luck in the application process so that you can make your mark in this world and add to the story.

I'd be happy to consider you for being a player. Please fill out the "Waterdeep Player Application" at the bottom of the listing and I will be glad to review it!
Unfortunately I only just realized that I did not specify that this game is intended for adults over the age of 18 and your application made that clear to me. I find it even more unfortunate that I will not be able to have you as a player even though you answered all the questions on the player application better than many applicants I've had in past games who were much older in age. I think you have a very bright future and I wish you all the best in finding a game that suits you needs as a player and can properly give you the experience you deserve.
