🏰 About the Adventure
It is the year 1516 DR. 35 years have passed since the Red Hand Horde War in the Elsir Vale. For the most part, the Vale has rebuilt and prospered, with leadership becoming more centralised under Brindol. However, in recent decades, the power of House Jarmaath has waned, while the other noble houses on the ruling council have steadily gained influence. Rumors of corruption and infighting among the nobility continue to spread.
The people of the Elsir Vale have grown increasingly uneasy. Threats are on the rise—bandits and monsters roam the wilderness, orcs and goblins raid outlying towns, and ever more disturbing rumors from the west speak of orcs on the warpath.
In response to these dangers, the Vale has seen a rise in mercenary activity. Hired blades take on whatever work they can find—caravan protection, monster hunting, or guard duty—seeking coin where it's offered. Meanwhile, the various town guards remain focused on maintaining order within their own borders, leaving the roads and wilds more vulnerable than ever.
With trade routes disrupted and the costs of rebuilding mounting, House Jarmaath has lost much of its former wealth. Once a symbol of prosperity, the house now looks outward, seeking new markets for the goods the Vale produces in abundance.
Our story begins in a tavern in Brindol, where our soon-to-be heroes have come together to form their own mercenary company. Having just signed their first contract, it is here that their journey begins—humble origins that will lead to an epic tale.
This is “Scales of War” a 4 edition adventure path brought back to life in 5e.
This adventure was released in Dungeon Magazine starting in July 2008 and concluded in February 2010. It's the spiritual successor to the epic adventure "The Red Hand of Doom" using the same backdrop of the Elsir Vale. This adventure has been heavily converted and put together to form a great cohesive adventure running from levels 1 - 20, in 5 edition rules. In this adventure, you will be able to experience the full breadth of DnD, from the humble beginnings of battling goblins to the epic conclusion of stopping evil gods.
✨ What Awaits You:
Epic Encounters: Face Goblins, Orcs, Undead, Githyanki, Dragons and much much more, in an unforgiving world that demands bravery.
Rich Storytelling: Immerse yourself in a narrative full of classic good vs. evil themes, with opportunities for character-driven moments and moral dilemmas.
Divine and Arcane Mysteries: Your journey will bring you face-to-face with powerful deities, magical enigmas, and forces that wish to bend the world to their bidding.
Magical Items: Find famous and powerful magical items, from the forgotten realms and 3rd-party content like the Griffon's Saddlebag. Items that are themed and built around your character to flavour them even more.
High Stakes: Every victory and setback will impact the safety of the Elsir Vale and the fate of the world.
Adventure Style: Exploration, Diplomacy, Tactical combat, deep storytelling, and meaningful choices abound.
Setting: Forgotten Realms, with personalized twists and immersive elements especially in the Elsir Vale, which at this point have been expanded much beyond the Red Hand of doom version, I like to say to my players “It’s our Forgotten Realms”
🌟 Why Play in This Campaign?
Engaging Storytelling: Your character’s choices will be intricately woven into a high-stakes narrative, where every decision matters.
High-level Gameplay: This is your chance to experience D&D in its full. Most adventures stop at 10/12 level, here we are starting at level 1 and continuing to 20th. A great chance to explore what it's like to come from a humble beginning and go all the way to being amongst the greatest heroes of the Forgotten Realms, is your character the next Elminster, Tasha, or Drizzt?
Dynamic Gameplay: Our sessions balance tactical combat and roleplay, ensuring everyone has a chance to shine. Whether you love strategy, exploration, or drama, this campaign has it all. The split is roughly 50/50 between combat and RP.
Stable and Consistent: Weekly sessions run like clockwork, led by a DM with over 7000 hours on Roll20 and over 5 years of experience running long-term and paid games, committed to delivering a polished and immersive game.
🎲 About Your Dungeon Master
Greetings, adventurers! I’m a 31-year-old Dane with a deep love of fantasy, inspired by Tolkien and the world of Critical Role. My DM style is rooted in dynamic storytelling, grounded world-building, taking influence from Matt Colville, and I love making epic moments that players will remember for years. I prioritise player enjoyment, the “rule of cool,” and creative problem-solving.
I put great effort into making a world that feels real for my players, and making the experience feel like friends sitting around the dining room table playing at home, with plenty of room for casual silliness and a focus on the serious story elements, many of my players have gone on to form real life friendships outside of the game as well, and with groups still running with the same players after 5 years, I think this attests to the quality of my games.
I pride myself on my easy-going attitude and consistency. I have run many paid groups over the past half-decade and have had great success introducing completely new players to the game and hobby. I would love to welcome anyone new to my table.
🔧 How I Run the Game
Tools & Immersion: Professional maps, custom handouts, in-world calendar, thematic music, and a visually engaging Roll20 setup.
Combat & Pacing: Fast and strategic combat that keeps everyone engaged, alongside character-driven roleplay moments, I employ various API’s and macros to enhance the Roll20 experience.
Player Feedback: I encourage open communication between sessions to ensure everyone’s having fun and that the game evolves to meet player interests.
👥 The Players We’re Looking For
We value group chemistry and are seeking players who enjoy teamwork, respect the narrative, and love to share the spotlight. A short interview process helps us ensure that you’re a great fit for our group.

Commitment: Reliable attendance and active engagement.
Character Collaboration: Bring a character that adds to the story and fits well with the party.

I've joined the currently ending campaign as my first ever DND game about 1.5 years back and let me tell you - you're in for a ride!
The effort and genuine interest and thoughts he puts into his game and the player characters involved is everything and more I would expect of a great DM. With the group I felt welcomed instantly and I've been nothing but happy with that decision!
Almost every dnd player complains about not finding time with friends or rescheduling ... So the consistency of these games is a huuuge plus, playing every week feels like an ongoing epic adventure and I always can't wait to play the next one 😇
Cavaires DMing is insanely professional, always well prepared and his detailed descriptions paired with atmospheric music make for the perfect game experience. For me it's a great combination of interesting roleplay, thrilling combat and always another secret waiting around the corner...
I'm looking forward to the new campaign and all the epic stories to
Country/Time Zone: PST current (Arizona doesn't do Daylight savings so will be MST in winter)
Preferred Story/Game Style: I have found I enjoy both RP and actual battle.
Contribution to the Group: I have been told I am respectful and quick to catch on to gameplay. I am typically a pretty calm and rational person.
Ideal Group Dynamics: Light and fun. Enjoy teasing and banter. I find characters that don't get along fun as long as their players are both still amused.
Experience with D&D/5e/Roll20/RP: Limited. Only part of one campaign. I moved and my new schedule didn't allow for me to continue.
Premade Campaigns Played: Part of the Mines of Phandelver
Hello, I have been a player in one of cavaire's games for 5 years.
These games have been a highlight in my week and a pleasure to play in. Cavaire runs his games very professionally and puts alot of work into npcs, settings, plots, and everything in between. Having a "living world" to play in is such a hard thing to do but I can comfortably say that he does it well.
The games balance of RP/combat is important and us as players have a huge impact on it. We've had dungeon crawls that lasted sessions and full on sessions of just RP. But its always the players that push the narative into thoese directions and it never feels like there is one choice we have to make. I always appreciate how much agency we have in these games and having a DM that can make adjustments and alterations acording to players RP and And character choices is hard to find.
In short, if your looking for a in depth game you can rely on weekly with engaging players and a DM that is attentively crafting a world to dive into this is it. Im eager to start the next campaign and meet some new faces on the way!
Just wanted to share some love for an incredible Dungeon Master I've been playing with for years across multiple campaigns. This DM is always organized, punctual, and has a true talent for making NPCs memorable and engaging. Every session is a blast, and you’re in for a treat if you’re joining this campaign!
Beyond the game, we have a lively Discord chat that keeps the fun going between sessions (although, let’s just say it’s not for the faint of heart, haha). Cavaire is not only a fantastic DM but also a genuinely lovely person—always rolling high on Insight checks and using it to their full advantage!
Highly recommend jumping into one of their campaigns if you get the chance!
We are looking at having Session 0 on the 8th of August, and then Session 1 on the 15th. Here is your chance to join a stable long-running group of friends, we'd be happy to have anyone join us for our next adventure!
And if anyone have any questions, feel free to ask away!
Been a player with the DM since nearly the beginning, just a couple of months in when he started his first groups in 2020 - was looking for quarantine relief as it had just happened, and I struck a gold mine. We've been on 4 campaigns together now, and some of them are set in the same "world/setting", our new characters in current campaign getting to have first campaign references to go back onto (even incorporating them into the creation of new characters to serve as callbacks), including the influence and marks that our previous characters left in the world.
Two things stuck out most to me - first of all, the regularity of our sessions. Not counting the holiday season in winter, in over five years we only missed maybe up to five sessions tops, often those that could come still managing to do something together, whether a side adventure or just a great evening to spend together. The other - the game doesn't simply go from session to session. There's active discussions ongoing on all the week, both between players and with DM themselves, Cavaire being willing to share some of what he's working on, as well as being very accepting on feedback. Text RP for more relaxed chats, something that might take up too much time in session, is also very welcome and encouraged.
All in all, struck a gold mine when I was having quarantine search for something to spend newly gaiined free time on. Never did I have thought that I picked wrong or that I should withdraw from group - it's been all amazing.
I've played in three campaigns with Cavaire now: Red Hand of Doom (conversion from 3e), Rime of the Frostmaiden and now Scales of Light (conversion from 4e) and each one has been awesome. He takes the source material and makes so much more out of it.
The games are totally reliable - no missed sessions, total consistency. The other big bonus is the mutual respect for other players that he fosters amongst his groups.
There are no D&D horror stories here. Honestly, just give it a go, if you like D&D - you'll like his games!
