Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online [Roll20/Discord voice] Experience: Any Location/Timezone: Texas/CST Schedule: Mondays 12pm - 4pm CST Roles sought: Players (4-5) Game style: Mix of RP and hack-and-slash (more hack-and-slash up front, RP building as the game progresses)
Looking for mature players (no minors due to some content) who want to break away from all the WotC and Judge's Guild material. Let's face it, you're probably just playing spoiler alerts at this point thanks to podcasts and twitch streams. This game will be set in the Lost Lands setting by Frog God Games, a massive, well fleshed out world that's been built up and built upon since 1975. you'll get the experience of a newer edition with some old school feel.
There are a few restrictions and rule variants that will be in play, so if you believe that "officially published" trumps world feel, then sorry I can't help ya there. This game is for people who want to break away from the cookie cutter.
Character Creation: 4d6 drop lowest - no re-rolls, no exceptions! (rolled in the game on roll20. no exceptions. period)
No Backgrounds. This includes , bonds, ideals and flaws.
No extensive backstories, a couple of lines is fine, but it's better to let your character develop through play, rather than before play. After all, mechanics are there because combat, many traps, and various hazards are LITERALLY life and death situations. This is D&D folks, not kindergarten story-time.
Death saves are done appropriately. If you roll a fail during an encounter but overall succeed or get healed before rolling more, those fails do carry over into the next encounter(s) until you get a long rest.
Initiative is side-based rather than individual initiative and initiative is rolled each round. There's a method to the madness, and is such:
Declare spells (done before the initiative roll)
Movement & Missiles
Melee actions
Spells take effect
Any secondary attack abilities take place
No non-Core Rulebook options allowed. Period.
Classes allowed:
Barbarian
Cleric
Fighter
Ranger
Rogue
Sorcerer
Wizard
Races allowed:
Dwarf
Elf
Halfling
Human
Half-Elf
Half-Orc
Elves have low-light vision, not darkvision. Half-elves and half-orcs have only a 50% chance that they inherited the vision of their demi-human ancestry.
There won't be rolls for everything you do, so you won't be as reliant on skill check rolls as you normally would. Also success in many situations is going to literally be determined by your roleplaying or description. Simply walking into a room and just 'looking for something out of place' isn't going to cut it. Being unclear as to what you're attempting will generally result in a disadvantaged roll. What are you looking for? Where are you looking? etc. Specifics matter.
If this sounds like the kind of game you're into, if you're tired of the cookie cutter, and want to actually be challenged rather than being hand-held through a game of "Consequences always result in a Win in the End", then you've found the right game!
Greetings. This does sound like a pretty entertaining game to partake in and always enjoy a challenge. I'd like to play a Halfling Cleric with a "Trickster" Deity.

Sounds good! I'll have a list of deities available (not using the D&D pantheon) in the handouts when I set up the game in roll20 if I get enough interest

5e seems to rely on backgrounds to get you the number of skills old D&D would normally allow. Will there be adjustment for that, flat out no, or am I mistaken on the average number of proficiencies the old book had?
Are the characters going to play like the 5e? To clarify: will they be getting use of their 5e class feats and such? Are you dealing with the sub classes the same?
I suspect you're using encumbrance (including coin weight) and potentially thirst/hunger?
Will we be roleplaying collecting all the characters, will they already know eachother, or are we all basically just answering the same help wanted ad?
I know backgrounds may not matter, but do you have any aversion to any of the players opting to know eachother from their past? Were they so inclined, that is.
I'll actually be editing the original post. Class and Racial features still apply. I'll give each player an opportunity to choose two proficiencies related to their class, and proficiency in a tool.
Characters will still get their feats, including subraces
Yes, encumbrance, movement and resource management will be in play, though early on I won't stress encumbrance as much as long as you're not being ridiculous with it.
I'm still working on how the characters will meet, or will have met.
Backstory can be whatever you decide upon. I'm personally not a fan of tragic backstories because I'm not running D&D to be depressed, but my main thought process is that it's better to have a simple short synopsis contained in less than a paragraph and let your character's story develop through play, because I'm an impartial DM, I don't step in with divine intervention to prevent a character's death.
I don't allow evil PC alignments in my games, and chaotic neutral must be kept reasonable

Any alignment restrictions?
