If I had a say, I don't want a paper doll inventory.
It is too much like a videogame, in my mind. And it sets up slots that need to be filled in a player's mind. I went through too much of that with 4e. 5e doesn't stress the need for magic items and I don't think there should be a need for filling them up on the character sheet either.

Just my 2cp.
I second this notion. I don't believe in the "best in slot" mentality. This is D&D, not WoW (no offense to my Horde brothers and sisters) ;)

Besides, a paper doll inventory is not really needed when you think about it. Items are either in your active or inactive. If you have a magic item that you can have active without attunement, it'll be included with the other active items (which in theory should be a much shorter list than the inventory section).
The only bullet-point items that could be a concern/improvement (which I am sure has been brought up previously) are perhaps:
The segregation of types of items in your inventory (weapons, armor, magical items, etc) - but that will get complicated if you start divvying it up too much (both in the UI and in the software programming), and
The issue of encumbrance, specifically, the use of items, like a bag of holding, that would reduce encumbrance when items are placed into the said bag.
Although, really, I find both of these to be minor issues in the grand scheme of things... I am just happy to track my inventory without having to deal with my horrible handwriting.
When you select the Custom Backgrounds, you are able to select Background Features and Background Characteristics.
Would it be possible to include the option to add those Backgrounds' equipment like you would if you selected the Background to start with in the Equipment section? For example, if Far Traveler and Mercenary Veteran were selected, include a list of both Backgrounds' starting equipment (not including duplicates) as an option to add for Equipment.
