This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As you stand there, you can hear the calling of birds, the sounds of small wildlife in the dead leaves which cover the forest's floor and the babble of the brook over stone and tree roots.
Keun looks around at the others, a wild look in his eyes as he says, "Let's get to the bottom of this." And tries to march off in the direction the sound came from.
Following the northern stream, you begin to faintly smell wood smoke on the air after a half mile, but to faint to identify a direction. At just over a mile, it is easy to see where your quarry left the path, and judging by their footsteps, have stopped running and are progressing at a slower, even stealthy pace heading east. At this point the smell of wood smoke is definitely to the east.
It doesn't take long, before you come upon the corpses of two goblins. They have been impaled on a swinging spike trap. A gate approx 5' x 8' and 2' off the ground made from tree branches, vines and sharpened wooden stakes has been tripped and swung out from the tree.
"Yikes!" Dverin looks to the guards, wondering if they've any familiarity with this scene through rumors or what have you.
Perception: 27
They do not, they are as surprised as you.
The trap was released by a thin tripwire made of twisted vine, and counterweighted by rocks in a net of thick twisted vines. The whole must have been the work of many weeks. The Goblins are typical goblins wooden spears, and crude iron short swords. Death would have been quick, but painful as they are still standing impaled on the gate. Each Goblin was carrying a sack containing some jerked meat, stone, flint and a few worthless possessions.
There are no other traps in the immediate area (100 yard radius).
Searching the area one thing stands out, besides your party's and the Goblin's their are no other footprints in the area, and the trap itself shows signs of age. Judging by the decay of the wood, you make a reasonable guess that it was originally constructed over 2 years ago, but has been periodically maintained. And while the materials are primitive, the device shows the workings the system show a level of sophistication you wouldn't think Goblins or Bugbears capable of.
Also, there is a very, very faint breeze from the east. The fire must be coming from there.
His eyes still darting around from side to side, Keun lowers his sword a bit. Looking up towards the east he starts to walk as he says, "The fire must be coming from this direction." He continues to make his way through the forest.
It isn't far before you see a small trail of smoke rising up to the canopy. You don't see any cabin in the area as you get closer and finally see the smoke trail rising from a ring of stones, over which a pot hangs.
Keun slows down and waits for the others while trying to get a closer look at the area around the ring of stones. (Not moving up just trying to stay hidden and see.)
Finding a hiding spot you examine the camp. It has obviously been here for months if not longer, the "fireplace" is a huge oak tree, with a large hollow opening. A log has been drawn up near the fireplace. As you wait to see if there is anyone in the camp, you feel yourself being watched. Eventually looking up, you see a large mountain lion high in a tree on the other side of the camp. You can also hear someone talking inside the hollow tree, but you can't make out the words.
The mountain lion ignores you. But in response I man runs out from the hollow in the tree, his brown and grey hair is matted and greasy. He wears an old ripped leather jerkin and ripped leather pants. In his hands, is a large wooden club. On seeing you, he stops in bewilderment. "What?! What?!"
"Mountain lion? What," he looks around confused. "Bach? You mean the little cat," he asks looking up at the lion. "And who are you? Why are you here?" he continues looking at you with suspition.
In near total embarrassment Keun's arms dangle at his side as he appears a bit deflated and answers, "Well. We came from the keep, there were these horrible creatures... hobgoblins I guess, and we were following their trail into the woods. We were chasing after some goblins and found them dead in some traps when we noticed smoke coming from this direction. So we came to inspect it and assumed it would be more terrible monsters, hence assuming the worst from your, uh, small cat."

Keun tries to appreciate the nature surrounding him, despite the unfortunate circumstances.
Somewhere in the distance to the north, there is high-pitched, inhuman scream.

The smell of wood smoke is much stronger now.
