I'm recruiting players for a play-by-post for Lost Mine of Phandelver on this forum, I will follow the module pretty closely, but I will occasionally tweak certain parts. I will choose 4-5 applications to be the party for this campaign. I ask that those who participate to be able to post from 1-3PM CST. Characters will start at level 1. (Do not submit an application if you have already played through this module)
I am a new DM, looking for their first group, so please keep this in mind if I make a mistake or don't remember a rule. This means that I will only accept classes from the PHB. Thanks for your patience!
I'm semi-experienced in Dnd with lots of RPG and roleplaying experience but never play-by-post. Can you clarify your requirement of "able to post from 1-3pm CST"?
I can sign up to daily posts and probably even 2-3 depending on timing. If you mean you are looking for rapid fire chat from 1-3pm CST, I would not be able to do that with a 9-5 job.

I'd like to provisionally sign up for this thread on the above understanding ... if it's just posting to this board at those times, I can do it. Since I'm now on Discord I MIGHT be able to do the chat thing SOME of the time, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to guarantee EVERY Saturday; and since it would be my first time combining Discord and D&DBeyond boards I'd need some patience as far as explaining to me how that works.
I did have a question about what you mean by "never played through the Lost Mine before." Since its the basic module the site offers free with your account, I'd think that many people here will at least have READ it. I've never played through, but I have READ it. However, I also have a friend who I'm teaching to play D&D who is ready for her first game, so if you want [people totally unfamiliar with the module I could pass my character on to her if you don't mind, and of course assuming you've accepted the character in the first place LOL.
Since I am basically interested, though, I'll drop in an aability score set using the standard array the dice roller tool give you when you click the "Ability scores" tab
Ability scores: 12111114616

So, to clarify, this is play by post with a fixed post time of 1-3 CST on Saturdays?
Oh BTW, passing on a couple tips I've picked up on these forum boardds:
If you put dice rolls into a post, like I've done above, and then edit that post, at some point the dice roller bot will reroll them, and then it will flag the post "This post has potentially manipulated rolls". To avoid that, most people put their first dice roll in a separate post and then "Quote" it in future posts. That will put in in a quote box, which never gets rerolled as long as the rolls are in that

Backstory: Jesthyra always had one dream in life; to make her father proud of her. And the harder she tried, the more disdain and contempt he viewed her with. Akrizon Kazykshth was the greatest warrior and chieftain their dragonborn clan had produced for many generations. Seemingly destined for greatness from birth, he was more than content with his lot, except that he too had had one dream in life. To someday train and nurture and hone, to be even greater than he was, his firstborn warrior SON.
Its a fairly common story, especially in this sad and imperfect world, but somehow Jesthrya could never quite see how that was supposed to be any consolation, that millions of daughters before her and millions of daughters after would be eternally condemned to their father's scorn because they hadn't realized before birth they were supposed to be boys. But unlike some, Jesthyra never ran away from home and never rebelled. Openly. She did her best to endure her father's harsh and grueling training ... she wasn't sure why he even did that, but she clung to some desperate hope that maybe in some sliver of his soul he hadn't completely given up on her the moment he saw she was a girl. But slowly ... reluctantly ... even against her will ... she began to see that her father, idolize him though she might, was wrong. That there were more things to be proud of than one's prowess in battle. That kindling joy in a child's eyes that would see them through life when everything seems going wrong ... that easing a hard-worked farmer's care by singing the ballad that allowed them to forget their cares for the evening ... that all things that ease cares and hearts, build lives and create, can be just as worthy as being a mighty warrior who only destroys or, at best, PREVENTS other warriors from destroying. In her secret heart of hearts, she was a bard; in all else, a heroes' daughter who should have been a son.
When her father abruptly commanded her one day to, "Go. I've done all I can. Maybe the PITS can forge you into some SEMBLANCE of a worthy heir of Kazykshth .. or at least strengthen you enough to BEAR one.", instead of the absolute ashen devastation that command would have stirred in her even six months before, she found herself grinning. In private.
But that was nothing compared to the bittersweet and piercing joy that nearly shamed her by bringing tears to her eyes she was almost unable to swallow back, that shining day, the last fight she fought in the arena; when she looked up after executing the perfect Badger's Jaw grapple into a Sweeping Leg Shin Breaker that won her the fight and saw her father in the front row. And he nodded; only nodded. He did not even come to see her in her dressing room afterwards, but she understood why and was grateful that he allowed her the dignity of reading his note alone.
You have not displeased me. Ever. But I know what you will face when you take up my wings to lead our clan, and the strength you will need. And a name of your own, so our people will hearken to you.
Go out and win both for yourself. Make me proud.
Er.
Personality Trait(s): "I’ll settle for nothing less than perfection."; "I’m a hopeless romantic, always searching for that 'special someone.' ”
Ideal: Beauty. When I perform, I make the world better than it was; and I have realized I can bring joy to warriors' hearts too, even in the death and destruction of battle. (Good)
Bond: I want to prove myself worthy of my father more than ever, now that I know he truly does love me
Actually there is one thing I was wondering. The Gladiator background allows you to pick one inexpensive but unusual weapon, and the list includes not only simple but martial weapons.
Now,, it would seem to me that even though the adventuring class you pick might not technically have proficiency with one of these weapons, it seems TOTALLY illogical to allow us to pick such a weapon for our gladiator background and then we don't have PROFICIENCY with it if we don't belong to a martial class?! Well, obviously the character had proficiency with it when they were a gladiator or they wouldn't have survived long using it in the arena, so the game is setting up a situation where you USED to know how to use a weapon, and then just because you become an adventurer in the wrong class you suddenly magically forget how to use it? That;'s STUPID. But the rulebooks also specifically say the DM has discretion to decide how and which rules to enforce strictly and which ones to bend or break in the interests of a better game or in this case one that makes more SENSE.
As a potential College of Valor bard, I know I will pick up proficiency with martial weapons at 3rd level and that the in-game explanation is that I would have been learning about them as I adventured, but I think that was designed assuming a character that didn't come from a combat-focused BACKGROUND, and to me it's still totally illogical -- in fact, even more so --- that I should magically get amnesia on becoming an adventurer and then magically lose it at 3rd level.
I'm still willing to carry around a glaive I can't use until 3rd level, but that would leave me with only one simple weapon from my starting equipment that I could actually use starting out the game, and if we happen to run into a creature that's immune to that damage type I'll have NOTHING to fight it with.
I would therefore like to ask that I be considered to have proficiency with my gladiator weapon (a glaive), but I'm not asking for any others before I would get them normally at 3rd level. But, if you don't feel comfortable stretching the rules that far, then I'd like to use some of my starting gold from the background to get a backup weapon; I'd think that to always have a backup would DEFINITELY be one of the most basic lessons my character's father would have taught her from her earliest training
=================
Edit: I'll have to buy ammo too I guess ... starting equipment gave me the light crossbow I picked, but no bolts?! First time THAT's happened to me on this site ...
Or...you choose a weapon that your character is proficient with as your gladiatorial weapon. Like pretty much all of the simple melee weapons, which fit the basic criteria.
I've noticed across several threads now that your perseverating on starting weapons for your characters, and specifically on trying to game the system because your fixating on not having the "correct" damage type for hypothetical encounters. Here's the thing that might help to remember. DnD is a group effort. There is no character build that is equipped to handle every possible situation. You need to think about making your character excell at one role within the party. Trust me, it will be hard to let go at first but once you do you'll be less stressed and more able to enjoy what makes this game great.
Sorry for the late response; since I have gotten multiple questions about the campaign I will answer them here.
1- In regards to what I meant by "able to post from 1-3PM CST". I meant that we will have two hour sessions between 1 and 3 PM, and won't play at any other times. This may seem odd to some people, but it's my decision for this campaign. You need to be on the forum for that time period if you want to participate in the campaign, occasional absence is ok but I ask that you try to be present for each session.
2- The campaign is going to be on this forum, not discord.
3- If you have read or played through the module; I would advise you to find another campaign. I can allow people who have played through or read the module to participate; but I ask that you remember that your character doesn't know what you do. I think this campaign will be uninteresting for people who have already played through or read the module because they would already know many major plot points. I know that many people with a dnd beyond account have already read the module, which is why I will be allowing people who have played or read through the module to participate.

I would ask you to follow the RAW in this case, I don't have a problem with you buying a "backup weapon" but I don't really want to make an already powerful class (the bard) even stronger. it might not seem like much of a difference, but I ask that you respect my decision. I really like your character concept, and I'm glad you're interested in my campaign.
I would also like to add that recruitment will be open for a month, since I forgot to mention that in the original post and want to clarify this ahead of time.
Thaurea grew up in a nomadic tribe that roamed the wild and majestic lands of the mountains. From a young age, she were drawn to the beauty and balance of the nature surrounding her. While she has being trainned to become a skilled hunter and strong warrior, she found her special connection with the natural world. During one of her journeys through the forest, she stumbled upon an ancient druid, a wise master of the forces of nature. This druid noticed her affinity for the wilderness and began to train her in the ways of druidic magic. They taught her the secrets of communing with the elements, the importance of preserving the balance of nature, and how to channel the life energy that flows through all things. She spent time since then in training, learning to shape-shift into different animal forms, using magic for healing and protection, and to understand the patterns of nature. However, a disturbing vision began to haunt her dreams. She saw some darkness threatening the nature and adventurers in danger, and she felt called to intervene. Moved by this vision, Thaurea decided to leave her tribe and embark on a journey to Phandalin, in search of answers and to play a role in the destiny that nature has in store for her. Her tribe may not fully understand her choice to become a druid instead of a warrior, but they respect her pursuit of harmony and know that she are destined to tread a unique path.

Certainly will respect your decision, and thank you groverbloom for pointing out how obsessive I've been getting about this. I;m not certain it was entirely trying to game the system in terms of trying to get an unfair advantage, maybe some of that combined with a strong streak of overanxiety and not really understanding well or dealing well with social things either in game or IRL, but in any case I'll definitely work to not inflict it on the forums anymore. Apologies.

Hello,
I have a Goliath Druid that is already done, but I could reroll again, if needed

Name Thaurea Wolf Tholake
Class Goliath/Druid
Background Folk Hero
Backstory

Apologies.
