After a short rest and a very long trip, Darbakh finally arrives at Evergreen Hollow. Though this isn't the dreary duergar druid's first time on the surface, it's his first time staying in a surface-elf town. He winces uncomfortably at the elaborate, artful designs on the buildings and landscape while searching for a place to eat and rest.
Rolls for loot from the previous two encounters on a d100: 46, 92 Roll for SP: 28 Roll for GP: 10
He eventually finds his way to the Grove and approaches the tavern keeper. Only when Liam Stonehand turns around does Darbakh realize that he's face-to-face with a dwarf. Hill dwarf, shield dwarf, Darbakh can't tell; all he knows is to expect a frosty reception, and it shows on his face. After a moment of awkward silence, Darbakh clears his throat. "Anything on the menu for a traveler from below?" the duergar asks.
(OOC: is there someone else who's playing the role of Liam in the thread? Or are city interactions also run solo?)

Liam clears a table for the duergar. His movements are awkward. It seems as if he tries to speak but stops. "Err um. Piss swill is on tap. Um, that's elven ale. Heh, do soot-dwarfs know about piss swill?" He pauses acting a little embarrassed. "I didn't... di-din't mean to call you a soot-dwarf. I meant do muddies hate elf sh*t as much as hillers?" He wipes his hands over his face looking embarrassed again. "Listen, I'm not racist. Some of my best friends were dark dwarves, maybe it's been a long time since I've seen an under-dwarf. No hard feelings." Liam grabs the elf ale and pours it down the drain and comes back with a foaming stein of nearly pitch black ale. "Ahh me dark brew. This be the good stuff, made by dwarves, it's got a kick. Let me know what you'd like. Me at yer service."
Rahne collects two skulls, two short swords, and two short bows and quivers from the dead skeletons. He also finds 14sp. He continues in Silverwood and soon encounters two venomous snakes (HP5, AC12).
Initiative Rahne 11, s1 5, sn2 4
Rahne swings his greataxe at s1 (attack 19, damage 6) to kill it and then swings it at s2 (due to cleave) (attack 25, damage 12) to kill this one, as well. He removes the head from each as proof. He finds 17 cp at the snake nest.
Rahne kisses his greataxe after the two mighty swings. He returns to carrying it on his back and continues on. He stumbles across a black bear (65) (AC 11. HP19).
Initiative Rahne 11, BB 8+1=9
Rahne wings with his greataxe (attack 8) but misses
The bear swings its giant paws at him twice but misses both times (11, 13)
Rahne tries again with the Greataxe (attack 18, damage 8) then swings again (attack 24, damage 1)
The bear bellows in pain then attacks and misses again (9, 10)
Rahne resumes with his Greataxe (attack 8) but misses
The bear swings its paws at him twice (23, 12) connecting on the first swing (damage 8)
This time, Rahne howls in pain. He swings his Great axe (attack 16, damage 10) which kills the bear.
He finds 17cps in the bear's lair and cuts off the bear's head for proof. He takes a short rest to administer his wound.

Darbakh fails to hide his disappointment at the creative names for his people, but he doesn't react otherwise. His eyes look tired until Liam makes amends, as if he's been called such names before.
"Any dwarven brew would be better than what the long-ears can make," Darbakh replies. He waits for a moment, working to conceal his reactions and hide his growing curiosity. "I know hill dwarves well...I've been on the surface for a short time. But I didn't expect one of you to have met one of me before."

Long-ears? Well that's true. Elves have too much ears and way to much patience.
Have you ever heard of the Ash Wolves? Long after the war, a bunch of us Hillers met up with all kinds of Spieces, Dragonborn, Halflings, Humans, even Duergar. We were doing the right thing for decades before the Ash Wolves changed. Back in the day, if there was a quest or injustice, then you call the Ash Wolves to take care of things. Now what's left of them are bandits and theives.
Having had his pride reduced, Rahne returns to town with Varnak, thanking him profusely along the way. Once safely back in Evergreen Hollow, Rahne gives Varnak the two skeleton skulls, the black bear head, and the two venomous snake heads to collect his reward (60gp) from Varnak. Rahne assumes Varnak took the heads (and XP) of the snakes that bested Rahne. Rahne sells the two short swords (25gp) and two short bows (10gp) at Evelyn's before going to the inn for a long rest. He passes to Liam 2gp and requests one night, one gallon of dwarf ale, and the biggest plate piled high with meat and vegetables. After quickly consuming the food and drink, he burbs loudly and goes to his room for a long rest.

That's correct. But she won't buy ammunition. It's standard rules to buyback at half PHB prices. So I'm extending that to magic prices too. Also, the monsters with the most valuable gear give the most sellback value. Check out the knight with plate.

"Ash wolves? Can't say I have, but it sounds like a right travesty. Perhaps they became what they fought..."
Darbakh settles in with his drink and looks a little more comfortable. "Are there still such quests around? For those who uphold the law?"
(Encounter is another Veteran so changed to 2 x Cult Fanatics. For the sake of flavour, for essentially the opposite of my Warlock and Monk, for the same CR, changed them to the Cult of Howling Hatred)
Cor raises his hands, ready to at least have an attempt at parley. It is not to be. The closer of the two is a thin, tall man dressed in diaphanous thin grey robes. He wears and mantle of crows’ feathers, and a helmet with an avian nose and a wing-like sweeping crest.
“Surely you must see, this world must be shattered for our spirits to be free. Are the teaching of the Stormriven monastery so very different?”
”Howling Hatred cultists,” Theirastra spits, her usual equanimity gone.
Yes, parley is not to be achieved.
Cor mutters familiar words and turns his ring on his finger to face the Cultist Priest. A thunderous Witch Bolt crackles into being and strikes out. (Howling Hatred Priest - HP 21/45)
As Cor backpedals towards the caravan, Theirastra runs forward to collide with the Hurricane guard of the priest.
The Hurricane is a little faster and lands the first hit on Theirastra (HP 8/15). The Sphinx flies in to help, flapping towards the eyes of the Hurricane and making him flinch.
The priest isn’t motionless. Even as his robes burn, he is summoning a Dust Devil (DC 12 Str) summoning it on Cor’s position and moving 30 feet forward.
The wind turns around Cor and lifts him up and back sending him ten feet back, where he hits the ground with a heavy blow (HP 24/31).
Theirastra strikes the Hurricane with three punches of utmost focus, each blow hitting against unguarded flesh with solid blows (Hurricane — HP 13/33).
The Hurricane is knocked back and Cor sees the Howling Hatred Priest preparing a dark invocation. "Halt." Commands Cor, but only the Hurricane is affected. While he stands dumb, the dust devil summoned by the priest turns toward Theirastra and lifts her from her feet causing her to stumble and fall to the ground (HP 5/15).
Nimble as she is, she is able to spring to her feet once more, and find herself inside the guard of the frozen Hurricane striking him twice in the ribs while he is helpless (HP 2/33).
Cor strikes with an Eldritch Blast and finishes the Priest's guard with a thunderous bolt of force.
The victory is short lived. Seeing his cultist fall, the Howling Hatred Priest summons a Witch Bolt at Theirastra's back, hitting in a scorching beam of magic that normally serves Cor faithfully but now takes down his monk companion. Theirastra's muscles lock and she falls to the ground spasming (HP -14/15, unconscious and death saving throws).
The Sphinx of Wonder dives in and slashes its claws at the priest, tearing through its stylised mask and tattered robes (HP 4/45), turning the priest's hands so that a second bolt of elemental power shoots past Cor's face, drawing all the hair on his head upward in static. The mage's duel ends as suddenly as it started as a thunderous blast from Cor strikes the Howling Hatred Priest and it falls like a puppet with its strings cut ... or perhaps a kite.
Cor quickly runs to Theirastra and casts Spare the Dying, and helps her back towards the caravan.
With the bodies of their attackers wrapped and placed beneath the carriages to show Varnak and the senior figures in Evergreen Hollow, the two elves make the second leg of their trip towards the inn in the hollow. When they arrive, they will find that the placce is not as they left it.

I was born to a respected family of archdruids, but was exiled once it was found out that my mother had an affair with a vampire. My adolescence was spent much like the parasites that I learned from- I took advantage of others' kindness to get sustenance and shelter. But people have figured out my way of life, and have shunned me once more. I wander now, hoping to find some sort of purpose in life. Nobody wants me. Nobody needs me. But perhaps life in Evergreen Hollow will provide me with new opportunities. Will I use my necrotic abilities for a good purpose and help others with their grief, or will my lonely upbringing influence me to cause ruin and rot?
*Rottenheart walks into The Grove, slowly walking to take in every detail of its interior. She runs her hand along the wooden walls, leaving a trail of fresh-smelling dirt. Eventually she comes across a piece of the tree with a harmless stain from the rot. She presses her jackal skull helmet to the wall, taking in a deep breath.*
Having slept and recovered, Rahne returns to tavern. He scans the room and does not see anyone from his troop and Liam confirms that no one has been asking for him. So he departs to the Silverwood Forest, playing his flute during the long walk. He gets to its edge as night is falling so makes a fire (survival 19), eats a ration, and beds down for the night. He enters the forest the next morning and soon comes across a solitary skeleton (1 on table 101).
Initiative Rahne 18, sk1 19
Sk1 shoots its short bow (attack 6) but it misses badly. It remains 60' from Rahne.
Rahne throws a javelin (attack nat 20) and pierces the bones (damage 8).
Sk1 shoots its short bow (attack 19) and hits (6 piercing damage)
Rahne throws another javelin (attack 18) and hits (10 damage) killing it.
He collects the skull and its short bow and short sword.
Rahne feels stronger and more focused after having defeated the skeleton. He sits to take a short rest and to consider his newfound ability. He decides he will try adding a second attack, probably a second swing of his great axe, whenever he gets the chance. He goes to collect his two javelins but finds one broken. He decides to press on in the forest since the day is still young and is soon confronting a giant spider (AC 14, HP 26).
Initiative Rahne 13, Sp1 3
Rahne quickly moves in to melee the monster with his great axe, missing with the first (8) and connecting with the second (19, damage 9).
Sp1 attempts to bite Rahne (11) but misses.
Rahne resumes chopping with his great axe (11, 12) but misses twice.
Sp1 again attempts to bite him (8) but misses
Rahne swings his great axe (15, 16) and hits both times (damage 14, 11) killing the spider.
He cuts off the spider's head to bring back to town and finds 14sp near the spider's web.
