The X tribe were thought lost many years ago. Forced to ascend further up the mountain to save themselves from the Great Gnoll migration. There at the top of the highest peak they made their home, built their great temple to the God Y. Now the Orb of Z, their prized ancient artifact, is fading. The last of the migration has passed, the paths are clear, the Goliaths are coming to find answers, to see what the land has become.
This is the cliffnotes version of what I am working on?
Really depends on the world you 'live' in, I personally dont racial stereotype, not all orcs are marauders etc. Your story can be so much richer by concentrating on the class
"It is not who you are underneath but, what you do that defines you" As you are on this site, chances are you are a nerd, and will understand this quote. Also writing background, show me dont tell me. Creates a more engaging narrative
Actually I just created a Goliath ranger for a lycanthrope party.
"I've been born and raised in the tribe's hunter clan. In all my life I have hunted, and walked the passages that not many knew. However one time on my trip to find some new pray, I've been attacked by a boar-like monster. It was a terrible fight I could survive only thanks to my exceptional physical status. But as I was hurt, I had to realize soon that it infected me, and I became as well a wereboar. My tribe knew that it makes me as a dangerous person among them, but thanks to my good relations with my family and some friends, I could still stay close, so I could still survive. I got so strong by the time, so I almost decided to start my own life away from the tribe to keep them even more secure, when a pack of hobgoblins caught me, and shackled me to be sold as some cheap meat."
What I like the most in this race is that their survival is really a challenge, and they can rely on only themselves. If I'd have to create another background story, that'd be about a traitor in the tribe, who sold its allies so his/her own tribe can benefit, thus causing some moral dilemma to my hero.
I am currently playing a Goliath Paladin, adventuring with a group out of the Arcanum in Nefrenhold.
so far, I have his reason for becoming an adventuring paladin, and lending his “noble” heritage to his pursuit of an evil chieftain who killed my character’s love.
Lo-Kag’s tribe had been an oddity amongst the Goliath tribes in his land. They occupied a seasonally verdant valley, high above timberline, though surrounded by towering peaks topping 20000 ft above sea level, which was mystically maintained as a sort of alpine paradise by the unique geological features that had created the valley. Long before the tribe existed, a massive chunk of an ancient glacier was split from its main mass, carving a deep valley in a row of peaks that nearly kissed the stars on its slow march to the lands below. This valley, due to its proximity to a lava vein close to the planet’s surface which had pushed these peaks to ungodly heights, was warmer than other lands at similar altitude. Lo-Kag’s ancestors had settled the valley and become much more than their bleak past had allowed, amassing resources and harnessing the power of agriculture and animal husbandry. This was a first amongst Goliath tribes in the region, and their wealth and prosperity were envied by the smaller tribes which were kept out of the valley by Lo-Kag’s father and his bands of warriors.
Though winters were often harsh, as even magma is sometimes insufficient against the North’s winter chill, the tribe learned to preserve their surplus and weather the seasons as they came. The valley always provided more. Under his father’s close guidance, Lo-Kag grew into a War Chief as a young Goliath, and lead his own band of 13 in guard of the tribe’s way of life. Upon his first watch, Lo-Kag was confronted by a spirited young female Goliath of a small tribe living up a hillside from his home. She spit in his face and cursed his family for what she accused as greedily hoarding all of the valley’s gifts. Lo-Kag was instantly in love. He released her from his grip with a wink and challenged her to a sparring contest, as he was a skilled swordsman, and hoped to prove his worth to this attractive creature through a show of strength, then through a show of mercy and generosity. She spurned his offer, cursed him in Giantspeak, and escaped his reach as she fled the scene.
Honestly I’m pretty new to the game but my Goliath is literally Kratos from God of War
Only thing that matters is that you and everyone else at the table are having fun, whether that's with a lengthy backstory or a copy of some pop culture character.
this is my charter gorthags back story feel free to use modify and edit sorry for spelling and punctuation and please tell me if some lore or something is wrong incorrect or not true thanks
gorthag is vary tall and heavy for a goliath but he was raised in an hidden goliath tribe high in the mountains where a community of goliaths lived that were cast out of there original tribes because they were to week to harm and prove there selfs gorthag was different he was almost insane to them he probably would have been chaotic evil if in weren't for how he was raised in a pure neutral good community so he is neutral evil now because of being raised there one day he couldn't take it any more running away out of irritation of the peacefulness in his tribe abandoning his name and after running for days he reached a new goliath tribe and the Chieftain gave gorthag a grate axe that he still uses today and told him to find and kill a feast for the tribe of 40 to 50 goliaths and bring it back and if he could do that he could live in the tribe but if he could not he would send him out with no help so he set out about 32 hours early the day before the feast he killed packs of dire wolfs dozens of bears tons of hares and finally a baby forest dragon twice the size of him and tipple the weight he helped the tribe fix the food and the Chieftain was intrigued by the sheer talent he had that he adopted him and trained him but the mother of that dragon was she was mad and spent years looking for her offspring and gorthag spent years training with his father the Chieftain and the the ancient dragon caught a sent of her offspring and was determined to find the source and it lead her to the goliath tribes settlement in the forest and she was mad to see her child's scull as a decorative pice on a tent she went in to a rage none of the tribe wanted to fight but they new that had to the Chieftain had recently fallen ill and was in his tent gorthag was the one who took care of him the most thats where he picked up an near expertise on medicine the dragon burt down the tent the scull was on witch was where gorthags father was gorthag got so mad he went into a primal goliath state with barbarian rage on top of that so much power was flowing through him that his body over powered and after one swipe of the dragons claw he was thrown back on to a tree the slicing of the dragons claw left a scare across his upper shoulder and diagonally across his chest and one more across a small portion of his lower torso all three gaged and deep while he was out the dragon burnt his hands and feet leaving them black an sited going up on his wrists and calfs he has no feeling in them an are resistant to fire damage he now searches for the beast that slaughtered his tribe and parents and wishes to slay it with the axe that killed her child he roams this world to do that one thing
I have at least one Goliath clan in my game. They are the Dhalk, and they long ago moved further into the mountains because the Giants of the North did not approve of them. They tend to be either Druids or Barbarians - and they follow the Eagle as their Clan Totem. They are usually a very honorable, if isolated, group. One of the main NPC's that the party in my game deals with is a shaman from their tribe who is attempting to become stronger, better, so that she can eventually return home and challenge her brother for leadership of the Clan.
I’m pretty new to d&d, but I made a Goliath Paladin a bit ago.
He was just up on a mountain, being a priest, praising Dunatis, God of mountains and peaks (I know, a little on the nose, but hey, I'm new to good backstory’s), when Dunatis told him there were people in danger outside of the mountain. He then set out on a quest to help all the people he could, but not because he's nice, but exclusively because he wants to appease his god.
I'm stuck between battlemaster, ancestral guardian and oath of vengeance. I have a very basic idea for each and they're all very basic, this goliath was raised high in the mountains with their tribe, strong and fast like the rest, hearty resolve, and a strong will to survive. For the battlemaster course, they were always keen at fighting with their peers, not necessarily the strongest, but they were quick and strong enough to hit back, and wise enough to control the fight rather than just rely on sheer brawn. They grew into a strong warrior who lead their tribe through great hardships and slew beasts with the rest of their clan, but when a new enemy threatened their borders, (insert enemy here i.e. horde or orcs or giants or a lord's men) they truly took up the torch and led their clan into battle to drive off the attackers. They used their cunning, their strength, and their control of the fight to rally the clan against the threat and protect what they had built. The reason they leave could be to scout out potential threats before they can arrive or perhaps the clan is all but decimated.
The barbarian could follow a similar path, but they hold a very close connection to family and to their past. This path involves our hero relying on strength, resolve and a deep sense of duty to bring honor to their family, and the knowledge that their ancestors will protect them no matter what. Another option for this one is that the ancestors which protect them are their parents, and they are regularly sorrowful for the death of their parents which they could not prevent, they don't want to seem weak because goliaths believe the weak must pass on to make room for the strong to thrive making this a natural thing that should be mourned, but the hero constantly questions whether they should remain strong and cold as steel or open up and deal with the grief. They can commune with their parents but this opens more confusion and conflict in their heart as they wonder whether they could have learned more from their parents, of if they were cheated from a life of happiness and care.
The third is the idea that through travels and exploring the outside world and seeing its wonders, they question whether strength is always the most important thing. To perpetuate this, they were always charismatic and friendly as a child, and learned to use their tongue to get their way through trickery or fear if strength ever failed. As much as they value honor and revear their history, they wonder if there are other ways to live while remaining strong in the battlefield, and they explore the path of faith in the unseen and the mystical powers it can bring. just as they begin to explore this path of half faith half traditional strength, their arm is tested when their clan comes under attack and there are great casualties. among those who were slain is the one person our hero loved most, the one to whom they were engaged to be married. Because they do not hide their feelings and grow thicker skin like their clan, they are torn apart by the loss and they seek some solace in any form. Recognizing that the threat could one day return, they make a solemn vow to use whatever means necessary to avenge the loss of all who died that day. and so they seek out the remaining force that attacked the clan and they rain great terror upon them with their strength and holy devotion to justice.
these were inspired by the songs "Ode to fury" by miracle of sound and "Amen" by amber run, so I'm leaning towards one of the second ones
how about a goliath who was hidden as a baby when his tribe was attacked, and witnessed the cruelty of people. for years he shunned everyone, before finally making a friend in a young halfling. after the halfling was killed by wolves, he shunned everyone again, before eventually becoming a mercenary who does anything for the right price.
One of my character concepts is Apothak Bloodletter Vunakathala, a Goliath who is the last of his tribe. A Path of the Beast Barbarian who tends to get a bit...wolf-like when his rage hits. He's Haunted One. Now he hopes to gain revenge on whoever or whatever killed his tribe.
I'm trying to come up with one, but I haven't been able to make a solid backstory yet.
I have been spit balling Goliath ideas so far
What Class are you thinking?
