So the first mini boss of my single PC campaign is going to be a Drow Druid/assassin. The idea is he is scouting the surface world, fetching mcguffins, eliminating priority targets as the prelude to a large raid on a wood elf capital city/sacred site - think the tree from avatar. I like the idea of him sneaking into secure places in the form of an insect or something.
What would be some interesting and thematic wild shapes for him to take on? Would wild shaping into a spider be considered honoured or blasphemous by drow society?
A couple of options spring to mind (and assuming the Forgotten Realms patheon of Drow Gods):
If the boss is a follower of Lolth then he would likely have to be a she as the clergy of Lolth may well view a male assuming the guise of spider to be heretical but an intersting work around could be a male drow actively seeking to become a Drider. The Wildshaping into spiders is the move toward that goal. If you give him level 4 spell slots then maybe tweak Polymorph to allow him to become a drider. If he dies and you want to bring him back then maybe Lolth revives him as the spellcasting variant of a Drider and sends him back at a later stage.
Othe option would be to use Vhaeraun, he's the Drow god of thieves, male drow and activity on the surface so you could have your boss pulling all sorts of shennigans on the surface to further his goals and maybe frame Lolth worshippers for things.

* Need a character idea? Search for "Rob76's Unused" in the Story and Lore section.
As I understood it, only females could become clerics but males could study magic. So I would've thought druidcraft would fall more into that category. If it helps, I'm picturing him acting as a freelance agent on the border of their society, along the lines of Jarlaxle.
You could also go down a poisoner route, have a den or lair where the boss cultivates various poisonous plants and animals and then use his wildshape to infiltrate places, dose food and water supplies with the poison and then wildhsape out again. If the party track him back to his lair you cna then have various poison related lair actions or minions running aroudn to harress them as they get further in.

Any magic item ideas to spice things up?
Anyone done something like this before?

if he;s freelance then pretty much anything goes, as long as he;s not flaunting his powers in front of the clergy.
Thematically, besides Bat and spider, a Cave Bear makes sense. nice CR2 creature - basically a Polar bear with darkvision.
