I'm working on a dungeon-centric adventure and the first dungeon is a carnival fun house gone corrupt. I have some things like a mirror maze with a doppelganger hoping through mirrors and a room with a spinning floor tossing both the party and the monsters against padded walls with a failed DEX save. I want to add more of a dark ride element, like a horrifying Disney Small World with either kobolds or just animated figures (or animated figures of kobolds), with parts in which the party can get off the ride on to a landing for combat, getting back in go through a funhouse section and into another cart for another part of the ride. I need more ideas for the dark ride and fun house. I get the BB fight in the gift shop area where this gnome has been strangely given the power to animate his animatronics to behave like the real thing (minus a fire vulnerability since being made of wood, but the stat blocks are the same). Any idea for scenes of Small World of Kobolds (or any other monster that could be dolled up to be cute), any other carnival attractions inside that would be a good trap/battle area?
"It's a kobold world": treat them like a swarm, each 1 HP is a miniature kobold that is trying to gnaw at your knee cap. They can occupy the same space, etc, etc.
Attractions: Mirror maze, Haunted House, Freak Show, Gift Shop, Wax Museum, Hall of Oddities (think the largest ball of twine, the only left handed screwdriver, etc)
This reminds me of the Murderworld level from Marvel Ultimate Alliance. They did a lot of stuff involving this. I pulled up the gamefaqs walkthrough and noted everything below that I thought you could use lol
Treasure chests with large hammers that spring out
Doorways/Gateways that are constantly moving and requires acrobatics checks to pass through each time, unless the damage the gate or block it from moving
A floor with some kind of painting or picture, certain tiles blow flame up.
A tiny wagon has more enemies come out than what one thinks could fit (like a clown car)
the clowns/enemies drop a coin that can then be inserted into an arcade game of pitfall. In D&D terms I would make it so that they drop a page out of a book that's over on a podium. They find the book (which is a jungle/survival themed piece of fiction [like the new Jumanji]) and place the page back in, which zaps them into the book's story. A series of swinging ropes over crocodiles, quicksand, some snakes, barrels rolling towards you, some firepits, some underground paths, until the come to a, in the game, a carousel that you activate and returns you to the real word. in D&D this can be the page at the end of the book or something.
There's a gate in the fairgrounds level that requires two golden tickets to raise (super high level magic makes it unbreakable/pickable if you need it). The gate branches off to two paths. One leads to a pinball level right after the stuff from above, not sure if this is in your realm of ideas, but here's how it works:
Giant rolling balls (boulders). If hit you go flying, for minimal damage
Large lightning rods, if touched (or slammed into by a ball) then you get hit my a lightning attack.
The flippers at the end of the pinball table (or in each section) that are snapping back and forth, flinging people with bludgeoning damage.
There is a scoreboard up top, the gates releasing you out of pinball open when you get 1 million.
There are boards with pictures of the creator of the pinball section's face on them, knocking them down racks up points to get to a million. There are some in every section.
After getting a million points you're given a golden ticket.
They run back through the pinball place to start at the other gate
There are also several giant flowers spread throughout this area, some release healing powder, while others release poison (1d4+2 damage/healing, or more if your party is higher level)
A claw game is here where you control a claw to pull out an unlockable character for the game. This could be changed so that one of the characters accidentally gets shrunken and sucked into the claw machine, or there is a shrunken npc inside calling out for help (who is he, enemy or friend?). You could also do treasure or a magic item (cursed?) if you didn't want to do a person. If your players have too much Gold like mine always do lol then you could even make it cost gold. Some perception and/or sleight of hand checks, Dex/Str/Wis saves.
There are giant fingers pointing towards the middle of a closed pathway, or towards the party. Pulling the right one reveals a hidden door, others unleash enemies or traps.
Once the gate is revealed as the players step through the gate, portions of the ground open up revealing rotating spikes, which can seriously mess up the party (results in player death in the game). They could be arranged in a maze pattern, or require jumps to get across (look up jumping length in the phb)
There comes to a point where there is another finger, surrounded on each side with a treasure chest. The left side has goodies in it, the right side is a GIANT wooden hammer, but doesn't weigh more than what a Small character could carry.
The next area reveals pallet and a bell that needs to ring the top. This is where the hammer comes into play. If they opened the left side, they may not open the right and get the hammer. Maybe give them advantage or a bonus for the hammer? To hit the bell make a Strength check, or attack? Maybe like a 24 (check or AC) and they have to realize that they need more than one person to help do it, idk lol however you want to do it. After the bell is rung the next area is opened up.
At the end of all of this is bumper cars (wagons?) Make each car look different and have different AC, speed, and Damage die, that way the picks matter and then they battle against enemies in the other bumpers. After each bumper is destroyed it explodes. You could also make them restrained in their bumpers and unable to get out. After they defeat the last bumper, a golden ticket is released.
After going through the gate they fight the big baddie. So I hope you can use some of this! I kind of got into what I was writing so even if you don't use any of what I wrote, I probably will in one of my campaigns lol so don't feel bad if you hate everything there!
