Hey all, im working on building a campaign for a select few players (3 to be precise). They are all dead, and realize they begin the journey by being sent thru limbo, down into the depths of hell. Im doing my own story, backstory, and adventure, but i need a hand with the bbeg's for each gate of hell. I wanted to incorporate dragons and wyverns into the campaign, i thought what better way than to make them the "boss" for each gate to hell! I need dragon idea's or even dragon monster sheets.. any help would be greatly appreciated!! The gates my players will be going through are as follows; Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, Pestilence. Not necessarily in that order, but i definitely thought maybe Pride or Wrath be the last one they must go thru. Any help?
Pointy hat has an interesting video regarding vampires, but I think the themes of the Seven Deadly Sins he talks about could work well for a dragon as well. Check it out. I think, personally, I'd try to move away from dragons being AOE spamming sacks of hit points. Wrath could definitely be that. Maybe pride too. But maybe try and present each dragon differently and give them abilities that reflect their associated sin.
I also love d̶̡̼̥̻͙̣̼̿͂͐͘ę̴̢̨̛̼̙̤̻̞̠̗̳̝̦̹̹̦͍̉̏͛̽͠͠sţ̵̢̼̹̭̖͔͎̞̪͇͚̞̇̀̇̀̒͂̇̍͊̏ru̸̮̭̪̠͆̑̍́̈́̑̾̒̑̂̕ͅc̶̢̜͓̮̩͎͕̄́͑̃̈͋̈͌̑̽͠ͅͅţ̵̢̼̹̭̖͔͎̞̪͇͚̞̇̀̇̀̒͂̇̍͊̏io̵̪̭̞̗̝͙̝̬̥͕̒ͅn̸̨͖̳͓͍̜̬̗̪̜̪̗̺͆̏̆̊́̈́̿̎̅̈͠͝͝ in my campaigns! In other words, i'm an evil DM.
i was thinking about like an insect type dragon or something with acid breath for pestilence, and maybe the nightmare dragon for wrath or something but for envy i thought maybe a dragon disguised as a human or something, and becoming jealous of there wealth/gear and just turning into this big boy that hoards flesh and bones? but i didnt state before, this is my first time playing the role of DM... been wanting to do a hell dive campaign since i was a kid though!
Oh, congrats! In that case, welcome to the fold and always remember the first rule: Have fun! Believe it or not, as the DM you should be having a good time, too.
Our of curiosity, why did you decide to go with six of the Seven Deadly Sins and One of the Four Horsemen (or more accurately, one of the 20th century Four Horsemen, since Pestilence is a recent substitution to the originals from Revelation)? I think your party is likely going to find that a bit strange.
If you want to hit up both the Sins and the Horsemen, you should utilise them in different ways. I would keep the Sins as your gates and make the Four Horsemen NPCs and faction leaders. Hell, demons, and devils are known just as much for intrigue as violence, and adding a four-faction conflict with potentially shifting alliances and rivalries can add a solid backdrop and depth to the campaign. If you felt rather creative and wanted some fun apocalyptic symbolism, you could probably do something interesting along the lines of the historic balance of power between the Four Horsemen of War, Famine, Death, and Conquest (the fourth Horsemen in Revelation) is suddenly thrown out of whack as Pestilence (the modern fourth) overthrew Conquest and the balance of power needs to be reestablished.
As i said before, this is my first time DMing a campaign, and im building it from scratch to play with some very close friends of mine. Im adding a little bit of everything to the campaign, as it is a work of fiction, and im making constant changes to the campaign. As of right now, we have not started this adventure, as i am still preparing and trying to finish up my player role in another adventure. Friends are excited for this, and each friend has their own perception of hell. (pun totally intended) Im even going to incorporate some viking lore and such to it as well! But def appreciate the ideas, gives me more content to run off of!
If you’re looking for dragons, I think there’s two ways to do it. Read through the MM and fizbans and see what personality types match with what you’re looking for, or just go with a theme based on colors: green is envy, gold is pride, that kind of thing. Neither one is inherently better or worse, find one that you think will be fun for the group and go for it.
Its going to be fairly easy to get close with a challenge by adjusting the dragon’s age category to match the PC’s level.
I would suggest that while themes like this this are pretty cool in theory, it can get repetitive if they’re fighting another dragon again and again. You might look at other creatures for many of the boss fights, and save the dragons for just a few of them. Dragons, imo, should be pretty special. Not just another mini-boss that shows up every so often.

An idea I’ve alway had but have never used is that envy is so jealous it mimics it’s opponents, stealing their abilities. Could be fun 😅
Be Excellent to one another. Rock on dude.
I don't have any suggestions, but this campaign looks cool! I only have one thing to say, and that's "GOOD LUCK!"
Monsters: Brathkal
Weapons: Sword of Ni , Bow of Ni
Spells: Zone of Ni
