wondering whether to present Artus Cimber to my players as an NPC ally. They had Eku and Inete starting out of Port Nianzaru, but have been steam rolling encounters with relative ease, so I took Inete away and am looking for a way to send Eku away too.
Artus Cimber keeps coming up as an ally NPC, but he just seems so powerful, especially if he has Dragonbait with him. Is there a very good reason to introduce Cimber as a potential party member?
The party is: two rangers (Gloom Stalkers), a Tempest domain cleric, a mastermind rogue, and a sorcerer. Typically the rogue only participates in combat to use his help action for other players. Mainly he uses combat as a distraction to wander off and do other things. Point being, they handily win combats when 1/5 of the party isn’t even contributing anything.
Anyway, the party has just arrived in Omu at 5th level and dispatched the Froghemoth at Kubizan’s shrine. Both rangers were swallowed and one was digested to within 5 hit points of death. It felt like great tension, but in reality the combat was never really close. The tempest cleric hit upon the notion of using Call Lightening to electrocute the water, maxing put damage with his Channel Divinity, and the Sorcerer followed his lead and was casting lightening Chromatic Orbs, so the thing was always operating at half capacity because of his shock sensitivity.
Point is, if Artus is just a way to bolster the party’s damage output, they really don’t need it. If he’s just there for more background flavor, they don’t really need that either, they weren’t very interested in exploring the nooks and crannies of Chult or its back story. So unless Artus really brings and important plot detail with him that I haven’t discovered yet, or there’s no way to succeed without him, I’ll probably just leave him on the shelf.
