i am building a quest where my 4 players are helping out a very unsuccessful realtor to fix issues pertaining to houses in return for decreased payment on their own home. I need houses with amusing problems that have more than one solution (aka not all fight fight fight).
ideas I have so far are:
-haunted house and all the ghosts are annoyingly chatty
-spacious house with “roommates” that are actually a great many of some creature like rats. -cottage outside of city with a pond containing a water elemental that likes to come inside the house thereby causing significant water damage
-perfect house that is actually a giant mimic
-abandoned mage mansion with all sorts of magic and beasts lingering around.
When hunting a wild house, be sure to bring large, broad-tipped spears with barbed tips so you can drive them into its hide and, with ropes securing the ends of the spears, restrict its movement. Remember: it is more scared of you than you are of it.
(Jokey jokey yes, but maybe one of the houses got cursed by a fey and just up and walked off into the woods)
The house of an elderly couple that is being sold by their kids. They have been moved to an old folks home but they keep escaping and returning to the house.
A house in a terribly inconvenient spot like the middle of a busy road or a haunted graveyard.
A werehouse. It is a human who transforms into a house every full moon.
A chicken legged house that has been found abandoned out in the woods.
A house haunted by aliens.
A house built in the way of a fey road. The fey are unwilling to walk around the house and they will tear the house down if something isn't done.
A house with a beating heart hidden in the walls that drives you insane.
A house with an eldritch giant's corpse under the floorboards. When someone is tricked into going upstairs they never come out and gold coins fall down the stairs in their place.
Maybe you could make a version of Baba Yaga's hut from russian folklore. It's a house that walks around on chicken legs.
Maybe something like Hogwarts where certain staircases only lead to certain places at certain times? It would be a fun adventure for the characters to get lost exploring this massive house and have to find a way out.
Also, you could make one be a "House of Holding". Same magic as Bag of Holding, but bigger. It looks like a little shack on the outside but the inside is giant. You could combine that with the idea above this to make a cool dungeons for players to go through.
The house has personality. It's not evil, it just gets moody and refuses to open doors unless bribed, complimented, or encouraged.
You've heard the phrase the walls have ears? Well, this house eavesdrops and gives snarky advice and unwanted opinions via creaks, Thieves' Cant code, and water damage stains. Never tick off a transmutation wizard.
The house itself is fine, it just happens to have been built partially atop a rift to the Ethereal Plane. That rift widens and contracts with the weather, which can sometimes mean your kitchen or privy ceases to be on this plane of existence for a while...
The house is perfectly fine but someone who thinks its their house keeps causing trouble to any who inhabit it. Or they are looking for treasure and will use any means to keep anyone else out until they find it.
There is a portal to hell in the basement. Look up the Amityville story in real life. Haunted house, new owners and all that.
Get a copy of Betrayal at House on the Hill (board game) the players build the haunted house as they go and there are some good plotlines to follow in the book, just add D&D character sheets for some fun mayhem and randomized houses...
a house where it crawls around on spider legs. its friendly, but verrrry unsettleing
a house inhabited by brownies that take apart any loose objects and make them into something else
a house whose door is a portal back in time
a treehouse. in a treent
a house on a rollercoaster
a hobbit hole made of enslaved earth elementals
a house that REALLLLY likes collecting things. keys, sending stones, organs, you name it
a house with the mind of Kevin McAlasiter

A perfectly lovely, no! Amazing house. In a bit of disrepair - but nothing too tricksy. Just so happens it's being used aspart of the Zent's (exchange for different faction as necessary) top secret teleportation network

RPGs from '83 - 03. A fair bit of LRP. A big gap. And now DMing again. Froth.

(He/Him), Pansexual dude. 🏳️🌈
I love cats, coffee and Dnd. Check out my tavern: THE PLATINUM KINGFISHER
Don't be a monday. Nobody likes mondays.
Of all the Dnd settings, Dragonlance is my absolute favourite.

Sorry, this is probably more of a combat encounter...
But... Mimic infestation. Many pieces of furniture or supposedly fixed items, e.g. fireplace, door, et al. are mimics.
Planar House - every window and the back door lead to another plane.
Moving House - it slowly moves at the rate of 1 ft per round.
Poison House - everything exudes a weak-moderate poison. Do NOT take off your shoes.
Plant House - it grows new rooms, furniture, etc. Causes major problems with crowding and legal violations. "Keep your house OUT of the street."

the house hates noise and constantly shushes the talkers unless they are merely whispering
Thank you everyone! I love a lot of these! It’s gonna be a great (1-3) sessions depending on which ones they wanna try and fix/solve
